#1544 2.10.4 hangs on launch in OS X, slow in Win

I just upgraded to the 2.10.4 release and on OS X 10.11.1 it hangs on start. The logo appears and that's it. If I right click the icon in Dock and select Quit, then it automatically opens fine and I can see the editor. However, if I double click a .tex file (I have .tex associated with TexStudio) then it hangs and trying the same right click from Dock does nothing, I have to Force Quit.

v2.10.2 has none of these problems. I just tried it again and it starts up without any issues.

There are no previously opened files that TexStudio should open.

Let me know what other details you'd like to know or things you'd like me to try.

OK, removed texstudio.ini. It now starts quickly but says it can't find any Latex distro, which is false. I have MacTex 2015 installed with the correct paths for El Capitan. Issuing "latex -v" from the command line works just fine.

Wht now? I don't want to start from scratch to configure TexStudio. Anything I can help with to debug why 2.10.4 doesn't start with my previous texstudio.ini?

Again, 2.10.2 works just fine.

In Preferences/Commands they point to /usr/texbin which no longer exists in OS X 10.11. However, v2.10.2 has no problems ...

Does TexStudio need absolute paths? Can it use my $PATH variable to look up the latex binaries? I'll try and report back.

In the meantime, you may want to have TexStudio look in /Library/TeX/texbin rather than /usr/texbin since OS X 10.11 no longer allows writing in /usr

I added /Library/TeX/texbin to the search PATH in Preverences/Build/SearchPaths and then removed the absolute path from all my commands, leaving only the bare command.

v2.10.4 still hangs on startup.

v2.10.2 starts fine and compiles just fine too.

Yes, but I edited it as explained above. I tried both bare commands (e.g. pdlatex), with /Library/TeX/texbin set in the /Preferences/Build/AdditionalPaths, but also using absolute pathnames for all commands (e.g. /Library/TeX/texbin/pdflatex)

v2.10.2 starts fine and works fine in both cases.
v2.10.4 hangs on start in both cases.

There is definitely something going on with 2.10.4 in OS X (at least El Capitan 10.11.1) ... is it trying /usr/texbin? That doesn't exist anymore in OS X 10.11 and it no longer allows anyone to write to /usr (not even root).

I found what triggers the error. It's the user defined command, see Tools\Commands\userCompAns in the texstudio.ini content I posted above.

If I remove that, then v2.10.2 starts.

Fixed it: changed "/usr/texbin/pdflatex [...] to pdflatex [...] in the user defined command Tools\Commands\userCompAns and now v2.10.4 starts as well.

You guys chnaged something in v2.10.4 :)

Moral of the story: if there are any /usr/texbin paths then TexStudio won't start in OS X 10.11 (doesn't exist there).

You should also fix the default search path for the latex binaries in OS X ... it defaults to a wrong (and very old and obsolete) pathname. The best is to try and execute pdflatex and if that works, get the path from there. Otherwise, a better default is /Library/TeX/texbin which is what MacTex is now using.

@Jan: could it be that the message box which informs about the changed paths is hidden by the splash screen? So TXS waits for a user response, but the user does not see the dialog.

@Mast B.: can you please perfrom the following two tests with your old ini including a /usr/texbin command:
When TXS seems to hang, hit <Esc> or <Enter> (which may cause a potentially hidden dialog to close)
add Tools/CheckOSXElCapitanDeprecatedPaths=false to your ini and test if the hang still occurs?

Benito added the new paths for OSX, they should be found.
Edit: There was a bug in the concatenation of the paths. fixed: hg 5637 (889b003badae)
