TeXnicCenter (TC) 2.02_Stable x64 (same problem with x86), MikTex 2.9, Windows 7 Ult. x64

When opening an existing *.tex file by double click or using the "file --> open" in the menu of TC 2.02, the program crashs instantly (see screenshot).
The details of the problem are (sorry, it's German):

There are no problems when I just copy the text of an existing tex document in a new *.tex file created in the TC.

It also works fine with TC 1.0 Beta.

What's the problem? Thanks for an advise.

I have the same problem. When opening a .tex file TC 2.02 crashes immediately. No matter, if i open the file by doubleclick or choosing open from the TC menu. Running on Windows Vista 64 bit.

I also have that problem, Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. I can see the file text pop up briefly within the window, but then it disappears and it complains about an unhandled win32 exception.

Debugging with visual studio gives: "Unhandled exception at 0x003fe034 in TeXnicCenter.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000004."

I have the same problem with Version 2.02

After using TEXnicCenter 1.0 for years I just installed Version 2.02.

TEXnicCEnter 2.02 crashes whenever I try to open an existing tex file (also files that I created with the new version). Existing projects can not be opened too.

To make sure the installion is OK, I copied and pasted tex content from another editor to a new TEXnicCenter 2.02 tex file. The document can then be compiled.

My platform: WIn XP SP3 32bit, TexLive 2011

    Thanks for suggestions
    lj

Same here. Crashes also if I want to open a tex file that I just created and saved.
Does anybody know if 2.01 or 2.0 work stable?

I had the same problem with version 2.02 ( problem APPCRASH TeXnicCenter)
TeXnicCenter 2.02 crashes every time I try to open an existing file tex (also files that I created with the new version). Existing projects can not be opened too.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times and in the first test works, but then stopped working again.

The only solution I found it is to install a version "TeXnicCenter 1 RC 1"
For now it's working ... Greetings
My platform: win 7 64 bit

I have encountered this problem as well, on XP. Unfortunately not my own system, so I can't say for certain which SP.

Same problem here. I am using Windows 7 x64 SP1 with latest updates. I am encountering the problem using 2.02 stable x64 as well as the x32 version. I tried two different PCs (work and home), which have identical OS configs but different hardware. I also tried the 2.0 Beta (I think it was Beta 2), with the same problem.

When I go back to 2.0 Alpha 4 the problem disapears on both PCs!

My observations might help the developer(s) to narrow down the source of this problem.

I'm experiencing the same problem since several months as well (version 2.02 x64 on win7, MikTex 2.9) and for me a re-installation of the same version always solved the problem, but only if I overwrite the customized dictionary.

During the reinstall of TexnicCenter the installer asks for resetting changes that have been made to the program since installation, in my case: to reset customizations, keeping output profiles OutputProfiles.xsd and keeping the dictionary en_US.dic.

The program keeps crashing on file open unless I choose to overwrite the dictionary en_US.dic during the installation.
Hence, I assume the problem is related to a spell check on file open and some inconsistency with user-added words in the dictionary.

However, it seems to be hard to reproduce this error, because adding words to the dictionary may work fine over weeks of use.

I haven't tried whether disabling the spell checking also helps to solve the problem, because I cannot test this until the error occurs again.

I hope this helps someone and maybe somebody with the same error can confirm my observations.

Edit: The error occurred much earlier than expected.

In my case, the error is due to a corruption of the dictionary file en_US.dic after adding words to the dictionary (right click on underlined word -> 'Add') - overwriting this file with the original one resolves the app crashing problem.

I tested a bit with adding words and interestingly the size of this file remains constant no matter how many words I have added.
A simple file compare shows that existing entries are overwritten.
Hence the file writing of the dictionary is somehow corrupted.

For reference, I have attached two dictionary files:
    - en_US.dic - the original one that works fine
    - en_US_edited_crashes.dic - the dictionary after adding a single word 'jittering' - TexnicCenter crashes on any file open if this file is present in the dictionary folder (of course you have to rename it to the original file name)

I hope anyone can confirm this as the only source of this problem, so it can be fixed soon. Thank you.

I had the same type of problem and I tried to install the older version 2Beta1 and this is working! So if you have this kind of crashing problem, try 2Beta1.

    I have Win7 64bit and installed the TeXnicCenter 2Beta1 64bit Version.

I tried before all kind of newer Versions (32bit and 64) and none of them worked. All crashed while opening a file. When deleting all dictionaries before, an error box appears that a dictionary couldn't be opened and I can see my opened file in the background, but after clicking "ok" in the error message, TeXnicCenter crashes, too.

Using the Dictionaries from 2Beta1 in newer Versions didn't work.

same here!, Texniccenter 2.02 64 bit on Windows 7 Professional x64!
Going back to 2.0 alpha 3 (build 1118) works fine!
Everything after build 1118 crashes on each start up.

I could reproduce this error. It happens when the storage of recently opened files in Windows is disabled. To fix see http://www.howtogeek.com/236711/how-to-turn-off-recent-items-and-frequent-places-in-windows-10/ and go to section "Alternative: Turn Off Recen Items Through Group Policy Editor" and do the opposite: set the policy to "Not configured" My system: Win7 x64. For me the error appeared right after I set the policy and went away when I disabled it again. It would be great if a future version would address this issue to enable the setting of the policy.
