Hi,

I have been using TeXnic Center 2 Alpha 3 for a few weeks now, very pleased overall, many thanks to the community.

I've been experiencing one small bug. Occasionally when TXC tries to save the currently active file, I get a small popup error window with the following message:

"Cannot save the file

C:\%path%\%file%.tex

Cannot create a file that already exists."

where %path% are %file% are the path and filename of the file currently being edited.

Again, this happens only during some file saves, not all, and since a file save occurs whenever I build, and also whenever autosave dictates, I will occasionally get this message at the beginning of a build, in which case the build fails, and also it will occasionally pop up out of nowhere because Autosave has tried to save and failed.

The details of the what happens are as follows:
- A save is attemped by build or autosave
- Above-mentioned error window pops up
- I press ok
- If I look in my working directory now, the file is missing, meaning the only copy is the one open in the TXC GUI (Scary!!)
- If I try to build again, I get a second error saying "File %path%%name% could not be found"
- I can then manually save the file via Ctrl+S and build will then succeed.

I haven't been able to figure out if there is a correlation with other programs being open when this happens, and it is sporadic and not unique to any particular project, so it is not feasible to provide a MWE to reproduce it.

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and MikTex 2.8.

The same error was reported below but was not resolved, though somebody said this error does not exist in TXC so I've attached a screenshot of the error.
Same error: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3134900&group_id=36323&atid=479426

Thanks.

I've installed the dev version you referred me to, and I'll try it for a few days and let you know if this comes up again. If this problem doesn't reoccur in the next week, I'd consider it fixed. Thanks.

    Hello again,

I'm using the dev version still, but I think I figured out the problem and it's not related to the particular version of TXC 2. I use Windows Live Mesh to synchronize my working folder between a couple of computers.

It appears that the problem I originally described only occurs when Mesh is running. I'm not clear if this is Mesh's fault or TXC's, and it's unclear to me why either of these programs would ever delete my tex file while I'm working on it.

I do know that Mesh is not running perfectly on my computer right now aside from this problem; it frequently thinks it's offline and so I'm curious if it sees the file change, locks it to try transferring it to my other computer, and then just keeps it locked because it can't transfer it or freaks out and just deletes it.

Just to be clear, the problem I've described above has occured with both the Alpha release and Dev versions of TXC 2, but I don't remember it ever occuring with TXC 1.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

I get the same error message in 1.0 Stable RC 1 sometimes, and have gotten it for many months (if not actually years...). There does not seem to be any particular action on my part that always triggers it; sometimes it will occur when I save or compile, but not always. As with Simon, I also have Windows Live Mesh installed - never thought about that as a potential issue. I honestly can't remember if this was a problem prior to installing WLM, so sorry to not be useful on that front. Here's hoping for a solution.

Relatively simple. Just google for "cannot create a file when that file already exists".

It is a message from Windows. I am somewhat sure that some other program like Windows Live Mesh locked the file, or something similar.

    Anyway, will close here.
