This nice feature could improve a lot browsing and searching our online
documentation.
Reinhold has come up with a proof-of-concept that works well (but may still
have room for improvements):

Please read the following discussion (though it has widely been discussed
in a number of other places on -devel):

While dealing with search stuff, consider whether the google search box should be
+v2.12 or +v2.13 for every page we host.

A patch exists (from dev/kainhofer), and I am reviewing / modifying it.

I was trying to make this an optional build. I managed to make it not build, but now
I can't make it build when the proper options are given. Either that, or I just
don't know how to set up php on my own computer.
Anybody else want to take a look? If not, I'll try it again next week.
(these patches go on top of Reinhold's branch)

Here's an updated patch 0002.
Reinhold, could you apply this 0002 and last comment's 0003 to your tree? I think
it's ready to go to master, although we should ask for a review of the combined
patch. Or I could stumble through that process if you want.

I know this issue is closed and no one should ever ever look at it; besides, there's no doubt I have missed more than a few episodes. However since Graham is about to launch the new website and release 2.14 beta, I'm wondering where we are wrt using AJAX-search by default in the official online docs?

We're not using it for the official online docs. I'm not sufficiently familiar with PHP+javascript+apache to judge whether it can be done safely (both in terms of security, but also resources), and it's not my server.
If you're interested, I suggest that you run it on lilynet, and we could potentially direct some people there. If you run it for a few months, with many people using it and no security or resource problems, then we could consider using it for the official docs. Keep your logs, though, because I'd want to see solid evidence that it's no problem.

FWIW, I've built and used the developer docs on http://kainhofer.com/~lilypond with the AJAX stuff enabled for quite a while now, and I haven't experienced any problems so far.

OK, I'm opening Issue 1270 about that. (Were it up to me, I'd reopen this one instead, but Graham does have precious hair.)
