I'm not sure if I like bars 5 & 7 of the reg test. A single number seems a little too unspecific to me, doesn't it? It would be more foolproof to have either a minimum bracket after the 8 (and perhaps increase horizontal spacing around the note for the sake of unambiguity) - or keep the "va" if the bracket collapses.
Certainly it's intentional that "va" and "ma" aren't superscript? For that would make sense in my eyes and save some more space.

I append an extract from a Brahms Waltz, set for accordion and published by Edition Schott in 1933. This is from a time where accordion notation was not all that well-established and/or standardized, so it leans back on piano traditions.
Standard basses for accordion have only 12 different single bass notes (that can be executed using different registers) and assemble chords from only 12 different additional notes (again, multiplied by using different registers).
Today's instruments feature combination registers where single combination register keys establish a combination of reeds. At the time this piece has been set, it was more customary to have single controls switching reeds individually on and off. Switching a single reed could be done using the thumb without apparent disturbance visual and acoustic disturbance of play.
That explains that the instructions here call for playing several interspersed bass notes in a lower octave. Note that the actual play button being pressed will remain the same: it is the registration that needs to be switched to the lower octave.
At any rate, the notation chosen is a single italic 8 below the bass note. Both the numbers as well as the italics distinguish the octavation from a fingering (seen elsewhere).
So at least for rendering this piece in LilyPond accurately in both visuals and Midi, being able to shrink an octavation mark to a single centered italic 8 would be called for.

Only a few hours ago I also found this kind of notation - bass note with a single 8 below it to signal octavation - by accident in a Breitkopf&Härtel 1879 score (to be found on http://imslp.org/wiki/Fantasiest%C3%BCcke,Op.12%28Schumann,_Robert%29 , p.23, second last line, lower staff, first note). So I withdraw my doubts :-) and agree with the solution Keith proposed. Thanks a lot for that.

Fixing issue 3690 solves this issue fairly well, it seems, if we let the line portion of the bracket become very short.
Maybe we should let the issue 3690 patch be the default. If anyone needs or wants brackets to disappear, the method minimum-length=#0 seems reasonably-easy to learn from the documentation. The default 8va text, with the 8 just left of the note-head for issue 3690, is quite clear when the brackets disappear. If anyone has substituted the text 8 for 8va, it looks more clear over one note with a short bracket.

The patch for issue 3690 makes the brackets clearly distinguishable for the situations in the bug report.
If we want to have the bracket vanish for short ottavas,
\override Staff.OttavaBracket.minimum-length = #0
