There is a desire to add this to documentation, but we're not sure where it should be placed (see discussion)

Update: due to 2.18 release process taking priority over rewriting alignment interface, the rewrite will probably happen later (June?) but you can of course help now by reviewing the patch to issue 3239 and helping with getting 2.18 out asap.
