#264 altIdentifier in msPart
Coming back to a discussion within ms-sig (http://listserv.brown.edu/archives/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0907&L=TEI-MS-SIG&P=R34) I would like to ask for revision of <altIdentifier> as child of <msPart>: <altIdentifier> cannot have <altIdentifier> as children which might be needed if a part of a manuscript has its own name. Example for this are the catalogues of E.A. Lowe (CLA) which list msParts as separate catalogue entries. The catalogue numbers would have to be encoded using <altIdentifier type="catalog">. Thus, <altIdentifier> should be available at least as child within <altIdentifier>?
I think it would even better --though I know that I ask for "breaking documents"-- to rename <altIdentifier> as child of <msPart> into something like <msPartIdentifier> in analogy to <msIdentifier>!?
In the case you cite, if each msPart has its own catalogue entry, I don't understand why you cannot use <altIdentifier> within <msPart> for it: could you give more detail of the example? Or do you mean that each part has more than one identifier? This seems unlikely!
Consider a composite ms; if I want to enter a *new* description, I will identify the parts within msPart by using altIdentifier. Now, these parts already have another identifier, a catalogue number, here in the CLA. But I'm not allowed to use altIdentifier within altIdentifier but this would be needed if we want to build the msPart-Identifier in analogy to msIdentifier. (Important: I don't want to encode the description of Lowe, this would be easy using different msDesc, but I only want to "cite" the number of the catalogue.)
Council agreed to make <msIdentifier> available within <msPart> as an alternative to <altIdentifier> and to deprecate the latter usage. This is implemented at rev 8828, but some examples are needed.
