Comment: I am aware that "apparatus" is a plural form of "apparatus" (along with the ungainly "apparatuses"), but the singular form is easier to read.

Suggestion: write "in a text-critical apparatus."

    This usage seems normal to me: it's not a plural, it's the "non countable" version of the word. Like the difference between "bread" (not countable) and "loaf" (countable).
