Submission of Summaries Tcl/Tk 2005 will be held in Portland, Oregon USA from October 24 - October 28. The program committee asks all people using and developing with Tcl/Tk and extensions to submit papers and proposals for presentations at this conference. Past conferences have seen submissions covering a wide variety of topics including and not limited to: * Scientific and engineering applications * Industrial controls * Distributed applications and Network Managment * Object oriented extensions to Tcl/Tk * New widgets for Tk * Simulation and application steering with Tcl/Tk * Tcl/Tk-Centric operating environments * Tcl/Tk on small and embedded devices * Medical applications and visualization * Use of different programming paradigms in Tcl/Tk and proposals for new directions. * New areas of exploration for the Tcl/Tk language The submissions should consist of an abstract of about 100 words and a summary of maximum two pages. Omit extraneous or redundant information. Length is not a direct factor in judging the quality of the submission. Send submissions as plain text to <tcl2005 AT tcl.tk> no later than July 1, 2005. Authors of accepted abstracts will have until September 15, 2005 to submit their final paper for the inclusion in the conference proceedings. The proceedings will be made available on CD-ROM, so extra materials like code samples are welcome. The authors will have 20-25 minutes to present the paper at the conference. The program committee will review and evaluate papers according to the following criteria: * Quantity and quality of novel content * Relevance and interest to the Tcl/Tk community * Suitability of content for presentation at the conference Proposals may report on commercial or non-commercial systems, but those with only blatant marketing content will not be accepted. Application and experience papers need to strike a balance between background on the application domain and the relevance of Tcl/Tk to the application. Application and experience papers should clearly explain how the application or experience illustrates a novel use of Tcl/Tk, and what lessons the Tcl/Tk community can derive from the application or experience to apply to their own development efforts. Papers accompanied by non-disclosure agreement forms will be returned to the author(s) unread. All submissions are held in the highest confidentiality prior to publication in the Proceedings, both as a matter of policy and in accord with the U. S. Copyright Act of 1976. The primary author for each accepted paper will receive registration to the Technical Sessions portion of the conference at a reduced rate. Other Forms of Participation The program committee also welcomes proposals for panel discussions of up to 90 minutes. Proposals should include a list of confirmed panelists, a title and format, and a panel description with position statements from each panelist. Panels should have no more than four speakers, including the panel moderator, and should allow time for substantial interaction with attendees. Panels are not presentations of related research papers. Slots for Works-in-Progress (WIP) presentations and Birds-of-a-Feather sessions (BOFs) are available on a first-come, first-served basis starting in August, 2005. Specific instructions for reserving WIP and BOF time slots will be provided in the registration information available in June 2005. Some WIP and BOF time slots will be held open for on-site reservation, so we encourage all attendees with interesting work in progress to consider presenting that work at the conference. Registration Information More information on the conference will be available in April 2005 at the conference Web site and published on various Tcl/Tk-related information channels. TclXML, TclDOM and TclXSLT version 3.0 are now available. TclXML is a package that provides XML parsing for the Tcl scripting language. It has three implementations of XML parsers: one written purely in Tcl and wrappers for the expat and Gnome libxml2 C libraries. New features of version 3.0 of the TclXML package include the introduction of the libxml2 library. TclDOM is a package that implements the W3C DOM interfaces for the Tcl scripting language. It also has three implementations: one written purely in Tcl, one written in C and a wrapper for the Gnome libxml2 C library. New features of the version 3.0 of the TclDOM package include major re-engineering to eliminate a serious bug in the use of the libxml2 library, as well as new API features such as node Tcl commands. TclXSLT is a package that provides a Tcl interface to the Gnome libxslt C library. Sources, and binaries for Mac OS X (Panther) and MS Windows, are available now. Version 2.6 of the TclXML, TclDOM and TclXSLT packages are now available. See http://tclxml.sf.net for further information and links to download. I've added a new utility sub-package to the TclXSLT CVS repository - xslt::cache. This module takes care of loading the documents for performing an XSL transformation, and caches the documents and stylesheets for those times when the transformation is to be repeated. Example: package require dom package require xslt package require xslt::cache # Transform doc.xml using stylesheet style.xsl with # parameter foo='bar' set result1 [xslt::cache::transform doc.xml style.xsl foo bar] # This time the source and stylesheet will be taken from the cache, # only the transformation itself is repeated set result2 [xslt::cache::transform doc.xml style.xsl foo bar2] --- The command xslt::cache::flush removes entries from the cache. TODO: write up documentation, add info to website. Volunteer(s) needed! It would be useful to extend the package in two ways: the simplest improvement would be to allow documents to be fetched via HTTP in addition to files. A more complex improvement would be to track document dependencies. Source documents may use external entities or XInclude and stylesheets may import/include other stylesheets or use the document() function. If any of these dependent files change then the cache should be invalidated. Thus the cache module needs to discover the document's dependencies and check them at transform time. Most of the hooks are in place to interpose on these functions, someone just needs to add the code to the cache module to build a dependency graph and check it for out-of-date files. Version 2.4 of the TclDOM and TclXSLT packages are now available. These join the TclXML v2.4 package to complete the v2.4 release series. The main highlight of this release is the introduction of the TEA2 build system. This makes configuration, building and installing the packages much easier and more reliable. Many thanks to Andreas Kupries, ActiveState, and Lothar Arndt for their work on the build system. For the TclXML and TclDOM packages, the pure-Tcl installer has been fixed and allows quick access to the package's functionality. As usual, sources are available from SourceForge: http://tclxml.sourceforge.net New for this release are Mac OS X binaries. The disk images include all of the frameworks needed to run TclXML/expat, TclDOM/libxml2 and TclXSLT. Loading these binary packages requires a patched Tcl installation (the latest CVS head includes the patch). A binary version of TclXML v2.4, including TclXML/expat, is now available on the TclXML SourceForge site: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=13178 TclXML/expat has been built as Mac OS X frameworks. To install, you simply download, uncompress and mount the disk image (and single click should be all that's required) and then drag the contents of the disk image to anywhere that frameworks are found, eg. ~/Library/Frameworks, /Library/Frameworks, etc. You'll need a patched version of Tcl to be able to 'package require xml' the framework, see recent discussions on the Tcl-Mac mailing list. TclXML v2.4 is now available. This version features a much improved, TEA2-based, configuration, build and installation system. New versions of TclDOM and TclXSLT are now available from the TclXML project: http://tclxml.sourceforge.net/ TclDOM v2.2's libxml2 module has undergone considerable work. This release has many more features implemented (see the ChangeLog) and is much more stable - the 'destroy' function for nodes and documents has (finally) been implemented. The pure-Tcl module has had many bug fixes applied, but otherwise has no significant new features. TclXSLT v2.2 has had a change of API, hence the bump to the major revision number. Stylesheets must be compiled using the ::xslt::compile command, and a Tcl command is created to access the stylesheet object. See the documentation on the website for further details. The version numbers of these packages have been synchronised, to reflect their dependency - to use TclXSLT v2.2 you must first install TclDOM v2.2. There was no TclXSLT 1.2 or 2.0, 2.1 release. TclXML itself has not yet been synchronised (you can install TclXML v2.1 with these packages), but probably will be in the near future.
