After poking around in the code for a while I tried compiling with a different 
version of gcc and succeeded.

The compiler which is NOT working is:

gcc (GCC) 4.0.2 (Debian 4.0.2-2)

the working compiler is:

gcc-3.3 (GCC) 3.3.6 (Debian 1:3.3.6-7)
