I had no idea when I started coding that Tcl/Tk on the Mac was such a third-world poverty implementation. I hope the MacOS X source is not such a problem, my client might buy a new iMac, which the WSJ reports is selling like hotcakes. George, I'm sorry that you're disappointed with the list, probably it's just that you've caught me and others at a very busy time... the problem with mac tcl/tk on OS9 is manyfold: - as Jim has said, the user community is not that large and is declining rapidly due to increasing OSX use. - the mac specific sources of tk are often quite hacky and newer MacOS releases have broken or made functionality more unstable (e.g. sockets, menus) - there is no "Tcl/Tk ActiveState 8.3.4", they are not supporting MacOS9; what you are presumably using is a distribution built by me... - lately I've been the only person working on the mac specific tk sources (in my free time), and as I've had the good fortune to be paid for a port of tcl/tk open source software to the mac in the last few months, of course during paid time spent on tk, I've been fixing bugs that showed up in that port. I've seen your [focus] bug in our app as well though, but haven't gotten around to fix it yet. - like Jim, i'm mostly using OSX now and the compiler/debugger used to build mac tcl/tk is very painful/impossible to use in classic mode, so I end up only spending time on mac tcl/tk when booted into OS9... - the other main project using mac tcl/tk I'm involved in (Alpha), only uses tcl and not tk, wich has contributed in the past to focusing my energy towards fixing tcl (which now passes all non-socket, non-thread tests on the mac btw, thanks to that work...) - there is little incentive for me and others at this stage to spend _large_ amounts of free time fixing buggy areas such as menus or sockets in OS9 specific code, given that it won't be used that much longer. - i'm also one of the tcl & tk maintainers for mac code in 8.4, so any leftover amount of time spent on tcl/tk often goes into tracking 8.4 improvements and adding/fixing code so that they build on the mac. your specific problems all sound like they can only be fixed in tk sources, and esp. the menu bugs look like they're in the very crufty MDEF code that is indeed buggy. so IMHO your options at this stage are to workaround the bugs in tcl as best you can (as you've done), spend time in the tk sources fixing bugs yourself, wait for someone else to do it (probably won't happen soon if at all), or to pay someone to do it... in any case, please report your bugs on the sourcefourge tk tracker, you can assign them to me (das): https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=12997&atid=112997 otherwise they will slip under the radar... sorry not to be more helpful... Hi, Sorry for the cross-post - this really involves both Tcl/Tk and GLUT pretty equally. I'm wondering if anyone has tried or has suggestions on integrating GLUT and Tcl/AquaTk into the same application. FYI, this is to bring a free for non-commercial (and source-available) physics-based animation research application that runs on unix & Windows to Mac OS X and maybe let one of the researcher's who wrote it use it on his TiBook. I believe the app. is used by a number of universities. This integration is pretty straightforward (if not very pretty) in linux, SGI and Windows. The basic way things work on the other platforms is as follows: main() - sets up glut, including an idle callback, myGLUTIdleCallBack() - calls TkMain() (never to return) with a callback of myTkAppInit() (a tweaked version of tkMacOSXAppInit() on OSX) myTkAppInit() - setup tcl/tk more or less as in tkMacOSXAppInit() - creates a one-time tcl timer to fire in a short time calling myMainLoop() myMainLoop() - calls glutMainLoop() (never to return) myGLUTIdleCallBack() - calls Tk_DoOneEvent(TK_DONT_WAIT) until it returns 0 (i.e. no events left) The program flow is as follows: main() --> TkMain( ... , myTkMacOSXAppInit ) --> myTkMacOSXAppInit() --> TclCreateTimer( ... , myMainLoop ) [Tcl timer fires:] myMainLoop() --> glutMainLoop() (spins in here, calling) [every GLUT idle callback:] myGLUTIdleCallBack() --> Tk_DoOneEvent(TK_DONT_WAIT) (handle pending Tcl/Tk events) The above only sort of works on MacOS X. Setup all seems ok, the GLUT idle and display callbacks get called ok, the tk shell/console works ok and the windows (both GLUT and Tk/Wish) can all be moved around BUT - the GLUT window never becomes the frontmost (it's always 'dimmed' or whatever it's called) - GLUT mouse and key event callbacks don't get called My guess is that the problem is a conflict between GLUT's event handling and AquaTk's event handling. It seems to work on other platforms because they probably have event callbacks registered for each window by the respective libraries and everyone is happy, but in MacOS X it seems like AquaTk is stealing other window's events. This was *definitely* a problem in Classic MacOS, which I tried hacking together way back and gave up on doing cleanly. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of time to spend on this, but I'd really like to see this app. on MacOS X. Joe. |

Hi, all... Just a note to save time in case anybody else runs into this. The little haxie WindowShade by unsanity seems to do something evil that runs afoul of Aqua Tk. If you have this installed, it will cause Wish to crash on startup when it goes to fetch its first event. I wrote the unsanity folks to see if they can tell me what they are doing when we crash, so I can work around it for them. Until then, if you want to run Aqua Tk, you will need to turn off WindowShade. You don't need to uninstall it, just turning it off in the preferences panel seems to do the trick... I don't know if it is a list problem, I got 5 messages from George, including the one I answered, and the ones he refers to. But maybe it is not getting out to everyone? Other than that, I don't really know what to say. From my side, I don't really use 9 anymore. I try to get to X questions pretty quickly, however. The menu example works fine in X, but I didn't really think you wanted to hear that... The MacOS 9 Tk community is not all that large, and when folks are busy, you may not get a response for a while. I know the Alpha folks are trying to get their 8.0 release out, and get it ported to X, so they are plenty busy... Presumably nobody else had seen these bugs (particularly the pack forget one), and nobody had time to tackle your code to figure out what bug it was tripping. Are you sure that you checked out the macosx-8-4-branch? When you add directories to a branch, they infiltrate the head as well, but the files don't show up till they are committed to the head. I am still working on a branch, so you need to add -rmacosx-8-4-branch to your checkout line. Hmm - for some reason this is the first mac-tcl email I've gotten in a long time. Perhaps the list has gone stale. I'm really disappointed with this list. I guess I'll unsubscribe in a few days. I'm working on a [paid] app for a record store, and it's for the Mac (under MacOS 9.1.4). My expertise is Unix (Solaris). So I thought I might be able to get some help when I run into problems. But no, I'm not even getting a response, aside from one thing. And that one thing was answered best by a Usenet reply. ---- The first coding problem I ask for feedback on was a problem with "pack forget" not completely unpacking a hierarchy, leaving a mess on the screen. Brent Welch's book recommends that technique for fast instantiation. Not a single comment, reply, or email on that. So I worked around it by not using it. I used two top level windows instead. ---- The next problem I had I didn't post about. I couldn't get focus to _any_ field when the app was first started. After a while I realized that when the window first comes up, if I click on the background desktop then click on my app's window again, it had focus. Focus to the field I had waited on (successfully) for visibility then had issued a focus command for. So, the work-around was to issue a toplevel .zot immediately followed by a destroy .zot. It worked. ---- The third problem I posted about, and received zilch comment on. Here is the post again: # Subject: [MACTCL] Another problem on the Mac # Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2002 16:29:52 GMT # From: Ge...@Or... # To: tc...@li... # # Hi. The last post I made was regarding "pack forget" not # working properly. # # There was not a single reply, email or list. # # Is this because it is on MacOS 9.1? # # Clients are hard to come by, and the client is running 9.1, # and so am I. I don't plan on using MacOS X until a number # of releases in the future. # # So I'd really appreciate it if someone would look at this bug. # The previous bug I worked around by not using "pack forget", and # using two top-level windows instead. # # ---- # # This time, still under a fresh install of ActiveState 8.3.4, # the menubutton is flaky. # # Out of ten times clicking on it, either holding the mouse button # down, or releasing it, the pop-up menu appears then <POOF> it's gone. # # I've isolated it down to a very few lines of code, enclosed. # # Please, someone tell me if this problem happens for you, # and what might be done about it. # # I source the file to execute it under wish. (The entry box that # used variable ::lce to display the chosen menu entry is chopped # out too, to no avail.) # # ---- # # wm geometry . 746x536+24+21 # # set ::Canvas2a [frame .f] # set ::COUNTRY_menu $::Canvas2a.mb # set ::COUNTRY_menu_mb $::COUNTRY_menu.mb # # menubutton $::COUNTRY_menu -text Country -menu $::COUNTRY_menu_mb # set mb [menu $::COUNTRY_menu_mb -tearoff 0] # # foreach {country value} {U.S.A. USA UK UK Canada Canada Japan Japan \ # Germany Germany E.E.C EEC Italy Italy Australia Australia \ # {New Zealand} {New Zealand} Mexico Mexico Brazil Brazil \ # {South America} {South America}} { # # $mb add radio -label $country ;# -variable ::lce -value $value # } # # pack $::COUNTRY_menu -side left -fill x # pack $::Canvas2a -side top ---- I have hacked out a work-around, after about 6 hours of screwing around. This involved looking up the bindings for Menu and Menubutton, retrieving and loading into my app the procs involved, hacking. This was the solution: proc tkMbEnter {w} { global tkPriv if {[string compare $tkPriv(inMenubutton) ""]} { tkMbLeave $tkPriv(inMenubutton) } # Commenting out the following line was the solution: # set tkPriv(inMenubutton) $w if {[string compare [$w cget -state] "disabled"]} { $w configure -state active } } Although the menu doesn't pop-up anymore when just clicking on it, by clicking (without releasing) and moving the mouse down slightly, the menu now appears consistently *without vanishing* before a selection can be made. ---- I can only imagine that many many more people who experience these sort of problems on the Mac simply terminate their use of Tcl/Tk without reporting the bugs, and this is a very bad thing for Tcl/Tk and its claim of working cross-platform. It's not like the 'menu' widget is an obscure use of Tcl/Tk. |

Call For Papers 9th Annual Tcl/Tk Conference September 16-20, 2002 Vancouver, BC, Canada We are pleased to announce the 9th Annual Tcl/Tk conference, to be held September 16-20, 2002, in Vancouver, BC, Canada. This conference is a forum to: * bring together Tcl/Tk researchers and practitioners * publish and present current work involving Tcl/Tk * learn about the latest developments in Tcl/Tk * plan for future Tcl/Tk related developments The conference program will include paper presentations, tutorials, Birds of a Feather (BOF) sessions and invited key-note talks. This call invites you to submit extended abstracts to be considered for the conference program. The conference schedule will consist of 2 days of tutorials (Monday - Tuesday) and 3 days for the main conference (Wednesday - Friday). Submission of Extended Abstracts The conference provides an opportunity to report on original Tcl/Tk research. The audience is practitioners and researchers who are intermediate or experienced users of Tcl/Tk. For this reason, reports on experiences and applications must draw out lessons for other Tcl/Tk developers. Topics include, but are not limited to: * System extensions * Novel Tcl/Tk-based applications * Experience reports on building applications in Tcl/Tk * Comparative evaluations of Tcl/Tk and other languages or toolkits for building applications * Use of different programming paradigms in Tcl/Tk and proposals for new directions. * New areas of exploration for the Tcl/Tk language Extended Abstracts should be written in English and 600 to 1000 words long (1-2 pages). Omit extraneous or redundant information. Length is not a direct factor in judging the quality of the submission. Send submissions as plain text to <tcl2002@-SPAM-.tcl.tk> no later than April 28, 2002. Authors of accepted abstracts will have until August 20, 2002 to submit their final paper for the inclusion in the conference proceedings. The proceedings will be made available on CD-ROM, so extra materials like code samples are welcome. The authors will have 20-25 minutes to present the paper at the conference. The program committee will review and evaluate papers according to the following criteria: * Quantity and quality of novel content * Relevance and interest to the Tcl/Tk community * Suitability of content for presentation at the conference Proposals may report on commercial or non-commercial systems, but those with only blatant marketing content will not be accepted. Application and experience papers need to strike a balance between background on the application domain and the relevance of Tcl/Tk to the application. Application and experience papers should clearly explain how the application or experience illustrates a novel use of Tcl/Tk, and what lessons the Tcl/Tk community can derive from the application or experience to apply to their own development efforts. Papers accompanied by non-disclosure agreement forms will be returned to the author(s) unread. All submissions are held in the highest confidentiality prior to publication in the Proceedings, both as a matter of policy and in accord with the U. S. Copyright Act of 1976. Other Forms of Participation The program committee also welcomes proposals for panel discussions of up to 90 minutes. Proposals should include a list of confirmed panelists, a title and format, and a panel description with position statements from each panelist. Panels should have no more than four speakers, including the panel moderator, and should allow time for substantial interaction with attendees. Panels are not presentations of related research papers. Slots for Works-in-Progress (WIP) presentations and Birds-of-a-Feather sessions (BOFs) are available on a first-come, first-served basis starting in August 2002. Specific instructions for reserving WIP and BOF time slots will be provided in the registration information available in June 2002. Some WIP and BOF time slots will be held open for on-site reservation, so we encourage all attendees with interesting work in progress to consider presenting that work at the conference. Registration Information More information on the conference will be available in Spring 2002 at the conference web site (http://www.tcl.tk/community/tcl2002/) and published on various Tcl/Tk-related information channels. Analysts said that the ships accounted for about 70 percent of the global orders and that another 100 LNG vessels will have to be built by 2010.<br> Korean firms also find that various offshore plants, such as a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) system, used for offshore oil exploration, are more lucrative. They say that the global demand for such plants has been rising constantly and the construction period of such equipment is usually longer. Daewoo Shipbuilding has won contracts to build ten LNG carriers last year, and the firm said it will continue to exert all-out efforts to win new orders for such vessels this year. Dorothy, This is great! The way that you are supposed to make a "Tcl/Tk" based app on Mac OS X is to put make a copy of the Wish.app package, and call it whatever you want - maybe TkCVS.app. Then make a "Scripts" folder in TkCVS.app/Contents/Resources, and put a startup script in the Scripts folder with the name AppMain.tcl. This will get sourced when the app is double-clicked. Also, the Scripts folder is added to the auto_path, so if you put other tcl library files, or a tclIndex file there, your app will find the other bits it needs from. You can also replace the Wish.icns file with an icon file for your App, if you want it to have a different desktop/Dock icon. If you were being really complete about it you might also want to edit the info.plist, and set things like the version string to appropriate values. Jim > Whee! Whee! Tkcvs works (with minor cosmetic issues) with the latest MacOS X version of tcl/tk, once I hard-coded the path to the Wish Shell into it. Tkcvs goes to a lot of trouble to ask the system about font sizes and such so that it will look native whether it wakes up and finds itself running under CDE, some funny Windows theme, or whatever, and that seems to be paying off now (pats self on back.) TkDiff isn't quite as lucky and has definite problems. What mechanism should be used to start TK applications? I tried telling the .tcl suffix to invoke Wish Shell (you never know until you try), and it dutifully started Wish but then Wish didn't run tkcvs. I'm sadly ignorant about Macintosh, being an old unix person, so the whole double-click thing is kind of a mystery to me. Should I be making one of those .app packages myself? How would it know where to find wish? Thanks for getting Aqua TK running. I'm much happier about having an additional platform to support than I should be :-) Dorothy -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Dorothy Robinson http://www.twobarleycorns.net |

Hi. The last post I made was regarding "pack forget" not working properly. There was not a single reply, email or list. Is this because it is on MacOS 9.1? Clients are hard to come by, and the client is running 9.1, and so am I. I don't plan on using MacOS X until a number of releases in the future. So I'd really appreciate it if someone would look at this bug. The previous bug I worked around by not using "pack forget", and using two top-level windows instead. ---- This time, still under a fresh install of ActiveState 8.3.4, the menubutton is flaky. Out of ten times clicking on it, either holding the mouse button down, or releasing it, the pop-up menu appears then <POOF> it's gone. I've isolated it down to a very few lines of code, enclosed. Please, someone tell me if this problem happens for you, and what might be done about it. I source the file to execute it under wish. (The entry box that used variable ::lce to display the chosen menu entry is chopped out too, to no avail.) ---- wm geometry . 746x536+24+21 set ::Canvas2a [frame .f] set ::COUNTRY_menu $::Canvas2a.mb set ::COUNTRY_menu_mb $::COUNTRY_menu.mb menubutton $::COUNTRY_menu -text Country -menu $::COUNTRY_menu_mb set mb [menu $::COUNTRY_menu_mb -tearoff 0] foreach {country value} {U.S.A. Daniel, This looks great. I am not that upset about not supporting 10.0 for=20 Tcl. There are a bunch of Apps (including Office) that only support=20 10.1. And 10.1 is SO much better... People can always check out the=20 old version if they really must support 10.0 for some reason. So check=20= it into the head. You can check stuff into the macosx-8-4-branch too,=20= right? If so, feel free to check it in there, otherwise I will figure=20= out why you can't. Thanks for hacking on this. Jim On Friday, February 15, 2002, at 05:18 AM, Daniel A. AFAIK this is not a bug, just the default behaviour if no LinkEditErrorHandlers are installed. man 3 NSModule: If the dynamic shared library has not already been loaded it along with all the needed dependent libraries are loaded. With the options parameter NSADDIMAGE_OPTION_NONE then any error in loading will cause the linkEdit error handler set by NSInstallLinkEditErrorHandlers(3) to be called or the default action of printing the error and exiting to be taken. also see http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/ReleaseNotes/TwoLevelNamespaces.html probably we should rewrite tclLoadDyld.c using the 10.1 TwoLevelNamespaces API anyway. MacOS X uses DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH. Hoever even with that it doesn't work for me. Look in unix/tclLoadDyld.c and you'll find this: dyld_return = NSAddLibrary(native); Looking at the docs it seems that NSAddLibraryWithSearching(native) (IIRC) should then search DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH, but changing that _still_ didn't work for me. In the end I had to manually implement it myself in tcl before calling load. Note that there also seems to be a bug in MacOS X where if "native" is a file that does not exist then instead of returning a failure (as the docs state) the process simply exits! Wonderful...
