Dear all, many thanks to the good suggestions! I’ve put a copy of the newsgroup to the demos of openacs.org https://openacs.org/demo/comp.lang.tcl It seems to work well .... So far, it is read-only, posting is not implemented jet. It is synched all 5 minutes. All the best -g |

Fixed now. I guess “man -l” does not suffice for reviewing manpages. From: Jan Nijtmans <jan...@gm...> Sent: Friday, August 16, 2024 2:20 AM To: apn...@ya... Cc: tcl...@li... The TIP has been modified accordingly with an addendum. I plan to merge the branch into the trunk in the next couple of days (with Torsten’s permission as he is away on vacation this month). If anyone has objections to the merge, please voice them now else I’ll merge in the next couple of days. Perhaps I should a mention a few other existing forums I know of: * There is a Reddit group for Tcl - https://www.reddit.com/r/Tcl/ - fairly low traffic. * https://lemmy.world/c/tcl - a handful of posts from me, no other traffic. * https://kbin.social/m/tcl - similar but non-functional at present. * There are a couple of Tcl-related groups on LinkedIn - Tcl/Tk Community <https://www.linkedin.com/groups/3187249/> and Tcl-Expect <https://www.linkedin.com/groups/734207/> - both very low traffic. Also, when the possible Fossil Forum was being discussed a few months ago, I looked into the possibility of bridging this with comp.lang.tcl. This would need import/export commands to be added to the fossil forum code, but DRH appeared to be willing to do this. Personally I don't see a great need for a new forum, but if one is created I think bridging it with comp.lang.tcl would be highly desirable to avoid fragmenting discussions. Colin. I don't think that Google Groups is going away. Other projects use it for discussion. It is just the synchronization with usenet that stopped working. I don't think there is any obstacle to creating, say, a tcl-support Google Group. - Marc On Wed, Aug 14, 2024 at 9:12 AM Patrick May <dus...@gm...> wrote: > With google groups going away, I think it's a bit of a problem that the > main community hub for Tcl is on usenet. Mailing lists or forums are fine, just so long as it’s not Discord. From: Patrick May <dus...@gm...> Date: Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 09:13 To: tcl...@li... <tcl...@li...> Subject: [External] Re: [TCLCORE] Tcl user forum? With google groups going away, I think it's a bit of a problem that the main community hub for Tcl is on usenet. Actually, even if google groups weren't going away, I think it's still a problem - I think Tcl/Tk is suffering from a lack of a properly accessible and usable community forum that encourages Tcl users to get together and discuss their projects/tips/tricks, and potentially draw new users to the language. - Usenet is pretty obscure now and isn't very user friendly or welcoming in the modern age, and as I understood it, in order to use it, you have to pay for service or run a server yourself manually if you don't want to pay. I was recently looking into usenet just so I could post on comp.lang.tcl and after encountering those issues, I eventually just gave up. - The Tcler's Wiki is pretty good and a lot more accessible, but the wiki format is a bit awkward for discussion and the user interface isn't really the best. I've posted there a bit. - I've sometimes seen TkChat mentioned on this mailinglist, I tried it once and it failed to run on my linux system, printing an error message and exiting immediately. I wasn't able to get it to work. - There's an IRC channel, but IRC is another old-fashioned thing that's not very commonly used these days. But it's at least more accessible than usenet. All this isn't good if we don't want Tcl to fade away into obscurity, and if we want to get new users and attention. I think it'd be ideal if some sort of new community discussion site were to be set up, perhaps some sort of online forum, but I'm not really sure what would be best. - PM On 14/08/2024 13:25, Gerald Lester wrote: > Very few people had access to make an announcement on https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.tcl.tk__;!!MvWE!AAUsNcQ9m-HC36g_r6namX6twHNtrudHZAcdsgmSMhOD4fxhUgqUUOksYcnWsma3bvpcwahhrNHtIhXYPQ4hNOI7Smf-NALcIQ$<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/www.tcl.tk__;!!MvWE!AAUsNcQ9m-HC36g_r6namX6twHNtrudHZAcdsgmSMhOD4fxhUgqUUOksYcnWsma3bvpcwahhrNHtIhXYPQ4hNOI7Smf-NALcIQ$> . > > The Google Groups was just a mirror of the comp.lang.tcl -- so yes, you > should use comp.lang.tcl for announcements. > > On 8/14/24 03:08, Gustaf Neumann (sslmail) wrote: >> Dear all. >> >> What is nowadays the best place for Tcl relevant announcements (like >> [1]), which are not core related)? >> The usual place was [2], and it is still announced on [3] that >> "comp.lang.tcl remains the best forum for Tcl/Tk discussions” (links >> to [2]). >> In essence [2] appears to be dead. >> >> Is it time to go backt to usenet news? - PM On 14/08/2024 13:25, Gerald Lester wrote: > Very few people had access to make an announcement on www.tcl.tk. There was such a suggestion, but it has not happened so far. However comp.lang.tcl is still active and can be accessed on any Usenet server by using an NNTP client. But Google Groups was convenient because it avoided the complications of using an NNTP client. I have set up another web interface at https://cmacleod.me.uk/ng/comp.lang.tcl - this is rather crude but I am working (slowly) on improving it. The site supports all non-binary Usenet groups, not just comp.lang.tcl. Another alternative for web access is https://www.novabbs.com/devel/thread.php?group=comp.lang.tcl. Colin. |

Dear Gustaf, Google stopped the syncronisation with the news group. That is why you don't see any updates. I use eternal september to communicate and it works great. No it meant tclWideIntType (because only there it overflows by conversion 0xffffffff as int), but... Sorry, I forgotten systems with TCL_WIDE_INT_IS_LONG, where tclWideIntType is undefined (why basically? I'd rather expect it as an alias for tclIntType, to be more binary independend). Anyway, amended now in [5e8df6f2328b226d] [4]. All, As documented in multiple tickets (https://core.tcl-lang.org/tcl/rptview/28), the zipfs-related manpages and TIP 430 have multiple inconsistencies with the actual zipfs implementation (and each other!). Torsten has created a branch, https://core.tcl-lang.org/tcl/timeline?r=zipfs-consolidation that resolves these inconsistencies using the actual implementation as the reference. The TIP has been modified accordingly with an addendum. I plan to merge the branch into the trunk in the next couple of days (with Torsten's permission as he is away on vacation this month). If anyone has objections to the merge, please voice them now else I'll merge in the next couple of days. The topics have already been discussed in the relevant tickets and changes unanimously agreed to within the group of TCT members involved in the discussion. /Ashok |

Remember: The sync is a daily thing. And: It happens 23:38 PDT ( UTC - 7, Vancouver, BC) i.e. 8:38 CDT ((+1) UTC + 2, Berlin, Europe) i.e. 12:08 IST ((+1) UTC + 5:30, New-Delhi, India) or 16:38 AWST ((+1) UTC + 8, Perth, W Australia) For me this means that the Aug 10 sync deep in the night of Vancovuer is on my Aug 11 early morning. Thus the (+1) I put in as a 'next day` marker. Oh, and IIRC the fossil timeline can be configured to show local time, or UTC. Checked, Tcl is set to show UTC i nthe timeline. Switching to local time will show PDT as that is the local time of the server. -- Happy Tcling, Andreas Kupries <and...@gm...> <https://core.tcl-lang.org/akupries/> <https://akupries.tclers.tk/> Developer @ SUSE Software Solutions Germany GmbH ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

When I install Tk 9.0 (on macOS) and then run tclsh8.6 I get this: % tclsh8.6 % package require Tk can't find package Tk If I then install Tk 8.6, tclsh8.6 will be able to find Tk, but tclsh9.0 claims to not be able to find Tk. How do I make both tclsh8.6 and tclsh9.0 work on the same system at the same time? And, why do I get such an unhelpful error message? Couldn't it at least indicate where it is looking for Tk when it fails to find it? The tclsh8.6 and tclsh9.0 executables are the ones in /usr/local/bin installed by running sudo make -C macosx install - Marc |

That option is called -name (with the class being the same as the name but with the first letter capitalised). It needs to be in argv at the point when Tk creates the main toplevel, and has been a feature of Tk since before I started using Tk.
