Interestingly, I always think of $ as "contents of", sort of like in C with
char *s; s is the variable, *s gets you the contents.  In Tcl, we sometimes
pass the contents of a variable using $var, but other times we pass the
name with just var, as in [set var] or [lappend var ...].  I guess it's
where you've come from that affects your thinking.
