I personally can do without the lecture.  I did not see anything in
the "string reallocation" discussion (however long) that was
discourteous or impolite.  

But I hope that the we don't restrict our discussions to TCT members.
I would want every opportunity to hear the various technical arguments
and defend my patch against them.  It may be both frustrating and
tiring, but it's far better than a "The core team has decided not to
adopt your patch at this time" form letter.
