You have to learn to be able to distinguish between the author and the work. You might be interested to read Gerald Weinberg's "Psychology of Computer Programming" for more on this. It is somewhat of an antique (published 1970?) , but the "egoless programming" part stands the test of time. (And TCT members, it has a section on "how to critique" which might be useful for future reference...) But now I understand why you seemed so upset about the tcllib critique. Don't worry, it wasn't you I was criticizing at the time. It's just that there's a better way to do it. BTW, I've had 3 books reviewed by sadistic, heartless bastards (some of them members of this very TCT!), so I'm fully sympathetic with the feeling of having one's heart ripped out and stomped flat.
