The question is: is it worth it? You would be investing work 
into an operating system that (a) never needed environment 
variables and (b) is on the way out anyway.

It's a much better idea (IMNSHO) to invest in opening up 
CFPreferences. That's a very nice preferences mechanism with 
inheritance and all, much better than what environment vars will 
ever give you.
