For the most part, if you have 9.0, which works on most PPC PowerBooks anyway, then you can get the latest CarbonLib SDK and if you get your code to work linking to CarbonLib rather than InterfaceLib, then you are pretty much done on X as well. So even if you don't have X you don't have to work totally blind. I think even if you have a 68K PowerBook, you can run 8.6 and some version of CarbonLib, but I don't know any of the details of this.
