That is great news! It sounds as if this may also fix bug 1628:

If so, that would allow me to upgrade to a modern version of Tcl/Tk for 
my application.

(And yes: personally I'd much rather not be able to disable sub-menus 
than have a crash, but it sounds as if that trade-off is no longer 
needed.)
