I dunno whether the core will go for it or not but we have a pair
of scripts (one stolen from configure or something and a post
processing one) that do some of this.  It's what gets the version
string in BK.

If it is of any help then I'm happy to forward what we use to Steve.
He's probably got something better (in which case I'd love it if 
I could use it).
