The linux kernel (i.e. Linus' tree) is a good test, but when I really want to stress gitk I run it on a clone of this repository: rsync://rsync.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tglx/history.git That one has nearly 70,000 commits and currently takes about 5 minutes on my G5.
