Within this file, it says:
--enable-symbols build with debugging symbols. By default
standard debugging symbols are used. You
can specify the value "mem" to include
TCL_MEM_DEBUG memory debugging, "compile"
to include TCL_COMPILE_DEBUG debugging, or
"all" to enable all internal debugging.
It would be useful to clarify how one specifies the values. Just adding
(if that is, indeed, the way to specify it) would be sufficient.
Also, there is a nit in the note about gcc - the word "if" should be capitalized.
Is there a page on www.tcl.tk which discusses the configure options, particularly the reasons why the defaults are set the way they are? For instance, why --enable-threads isn't on by default on Unix, etc.? I am not suggesting this info be present in the README - but if there is a page that talks about that, it would be useful to point the reader to that page for more information.
In this sentence:
If you need to modify Makefile,
are comments at the beginning of it that describe the things you
might want to change and how to change them.
there is a word missing ("there" which goes right before "are comments") and you might want to say here that the changes should be made to Makefile.in (you've already said not to change gcc in the Makefile as it is).
