Recording suspicious and non-trapped 404 hits to a database can allow for tracking of reports, retro-actively deciding to include a 404 requested item that didn't get flagged initially (and having report-ready information available), and balancing or grouping reports to prevent email floods that get sparked by botfloods.
Bot floods can trigger a shared-hosting account's security limiters, dropping all emails sent after a threshold gets hit (e.g., 5 mail-failures/hr causeing subsequent outgoing mail reports to be discarded until that time passes).
