I've been using Task Coach for years with no problem. All of a sudden, when I download data to CSV, there is no data in the download. I've attached 2 CSV files... one that worked as usual, and one that downloaded without the data (which is all it will do now). 2nd problem... I thought, maybe I shoulkd make sure I have the latest version of Task Coach. I tried to find out how to update. i.e. should I uninstall the old version before installing a newer version. I could not find any instruction. I downloaded from here, for Windows... https://www.fosshub.com/Task-Coach.html - I have Windows 10, which wasn't listed, but I couldn;t find any instruction about that. So I tried to install & it wouldn't work. Attached also is a screen shot of the pop up saying it didn't work.
Looks like only one of the attachments saved. I'll try the others again here.
seems I only can upload one attachment per message, so they are each in new message
Same error result when I try to install the download from
Sourceforge.
Why are there no instructions to be found?
Do I have to uninstall the currently installed Task Coach
before I install new version?
Also, can you resolve the other issue I noted?. that the
task/effort data no longer downloads to CSV, after working
fine for many years.

Sorry, I'm not sure I know how to help. You may try uninstalling. The instructions I don't know about, and I'm not familiar with Windows. To fully reset Task Coach, try renaming or removing the .ini file see https://answers.launchpad.net/taskcoach/+faq/1061
If you are seeing the newest version number in the about when using the program, you are running it successfully.
I just tested myself doing CSV export on GNU/Linux and it worked fine.
Unfortunately, development has been stalled for years now. It's blocked by the need to redo the codebase for Python3. I'm not one of the coders, I've been involved in other ways, and it's still just volunteer time which I have limited.
Maybe Jerome can chime in. But I'd try the .ini reset and uninstall/reinstall and I don't have more to suggest. Please do let us know if you get it working.
Hi.
I just checked and I'm using an old version. Version 1.4.3,
January 31, 2016
I'm afraid if I uninstall, and the install is still not
successful, then I won't be able to use the program.
Right now it works, except it will no longer export the
data.
So, in general, it's not necessary to uninstall an old
version before installing a newer version?
That's not likely the reason that the install is not
working?
Is it OK, or helpful, to do this, that you noted, even if I
clearly have a very old version?. "To fully reset Task
Coach, try renaming or removing the .ini file see
https://answers.launchpad.net/taskcoach/+faq/1061
Thanks for any insights.

It's definitely safe to rename the .ini file because you can always delete the new one and rename the old one back.
It should be safe to uninstall and reinstall also, but I can't 100% guarantee. You could try asking someone with a similar system to install the new version and make sure it works for them. One way or another, it should be feasible to install.
If it were me, I'd feel okay doing the uninstall and reinstall of new version.
Hi,
I was able to install the latest version (seems I had to be
logged in to Admin user), and verified my file is open in
the newly installed version.
But still the same problem persists, that the data will not
download to CSV.
I tried to find the .ini file to rename, but the instruction
in the link you gave was not working.
There is no "Application Data" folder in the User folder
(not in the Admin user or in the user I normally use).
There is a "Roaming" folder, but Task Coach is not there.
From link you gave..
Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Users\<yourname>\Application
Data\Roaming\TaskCoach</yourname>
Is there some other way to find the .ini file?
I'm using Windows 10
The way I download data that always worked until recently..
I highlight the Efforts I want to download, then go to
View>New Viewer> Effort for selected tasks".
Then a window pops up showing the efforts I selected. I
select "Effort by Month", then I go to..
File>Export>Export as CSV
In the pop up I select "Effort for Selected Tasks" and check
all the boxes for data to download
That always worked fine until recently.
When the data stopped downloading, I tried selecting "Task"
instead of "Effort for selected Tasks", to see if that would
work. That also did not work.
I tried again now, and that will download data, but it's not
in the format that is useful, as it has always been under
"Effort for selected tasks".
The "Tasks" format does not show total for the "parent"
efforts, as I need, as the "Effort for selected tasks"
always did.

Glad you got the install working, but I don't know what to do next.
I would test with made-up new tasks in a new task file. If it works there, then it's something with the task file it seems. If it fails, then it is probably related to the .ini
Is there a version of Application Data directory that is not within your user? Maybe "ProgramData" or "Program Files" within Windows? I don't know Windows, but you can probably find some advice on how to search so that you can find throughout the system where the .ini is now located. If you figure this out, I can update the FAQ
I don't know how to create a new Task Coach file.
Under File, I found..
"Save selected tasks to a new task file."
I did that, but the tasks saved in new task file, have the
same issue of not exporting data to CSV
How can I start a new file from scratch, where I could
create new tasks?
I got into AppData>Roaming and see a folder Task Coach.
To find it, I put this in my Windows search bar: %appdata%
It was in the location as described, but I couldn't see when
I followed that path described.
I don't know how to identify an .ini file in that folder.
There is one file that's named TaskCoach, that shows file
type is "Configuration Ssettings".
Is that it?
I don't understand renaming it, if I do find it, so I may be
in over my head.
I've google & searched in user manual, but don't find basic
instruction.

I see why that's confusing. Do "close" in the file menu to close the current task file. Then, you have a fresh nothing which you can start making tasks in and saving as a new file.
