#316 Using Start/Stop Time on New Effort

Firstly i'd like to thank you for this useful open source tool. I've a request for date using while creating new effort. On 1.3.20 version we can edit "Start" and "Stop" blanks manually. And i think this way was better way then the way which is used by 1.3.21. On 1.3.21 version i can't completely edit start and stop time. Before i put time without AM/PM (i.e. 22:45 etc.). But now i must define AM/PM. Could you make it optional? I think it will be better when this is optional.

Thanks in advance.

I think you just want this request:

Most users of US English use 12-hour time. We still use 24-hour time for other languages, so the system assumes the standard based on your language. If you have the wrong system chosen for your language, that is a bug which we should fix.

In 1.3.20, AM/PM was still needed for those using 12-hour time.

Anyway, the new date/time control is just as editable as before, actually more. You can simply type date and time with numbers and with "." or "/" or ":" to change fields, or you can use the arrow keys (up/down to change the details, left/right to move between fields). You can also use shortcuts and type "n" to jump to now (and t for today, s or S for start of day/workday, e or E for end).

If you get used to the new system, you will find it very powerful.

If your issue is about 12-hour vs 24-hour time, this shouldn't be different from before, but let us know if it is choosing wrongly for your language.

    Hello Aron,

Thanks for your concern. And thansk for useful shortcuts on Time editing.

    My issue is about 12/24 hour time and time editing;
    - 12/24 hour time issue: I use English as language and my time format is 12-hour time. How can i change it 24-hour time?
    - Time editing: On 1.3.20, i can copy/paste time and date but on 1.3.22 i can't. When i click time or date firstly selection menu appears but i don't want to waste time to select date, hour, minutes, seconds. I need click any other point and after that i can write manually. Please rollback it because i strongly think it was useful than now. Or if you think new editing is useful than older one, that time please make it optional from Preferences menu. Can i tell my request?

    Thanks so much.

    Thank you for the clarity.

The answer is NOT to roll-back, that would be counter-productive. The old system had many bugs. It was basically the wxPython default and we had not as much room to adjust it.

The answer is to improve the new system so that it is fully satisfactory. We are not going to bring back the old system or make it optional. But we will put a priority on making the new system work for you. Clearly, there are just some elements missing that you valued from the old one.

You can change to 24-hour time by using a language setting that uses 24-hour time. We should probably go ahead and make a preference setting for choosing this regardless of language as it is a common enough request.

Copy and paste is definitely an issue. We'll need to make it easy to still do that with the new system.

We'll also consider a way to have the popup not be automatic (although, as I said, it already is not automatic if you use TAB to get to the item instead of mouse-click.

Still, I have the feeling that you aren't clear about what the problem really is. You seem to be blaming the popup as the problem, but maybe the problem you have is with the typing. If you could type exactly as you want, is it a problem if the popup is also shown? I'm guessing that your complaint is really about the typing.

I notice that you can no longer type "05" for the date, and maybe you thought that you can't type at all. But the new system just uses "5" and no "0" when typing, but this isn't obvious.

So I think we need to fix these things. The basic point is: please tell us what is not working and how you want things to be. We will figure out whether roll-back or other adjustments are the best way to get what you need.

Update: several of the issues (not all though) that you may be having have been fixed in the latest bugfix version. Would you please try it and see if it works better for you?

BTW the next version will allow you to hit Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on OS X) to paste the content of the clipboard as the date or time (provided it's well formatted).
