Sorry for the inconvenience. To better help you I need more information:
What version of Task Coach are you using and on what platform (Windows, Mac?).
When you start Task Coach, does it show a filename in the window title bar?
When you start Task Coach, does it start with the default factory settings or does it open the way you configured it? (WIndow position/size, language, stuff like that)
When you open the file menu, does it show a list of recently opened files numbered 1, 2, 3, etc.?
Thanks, Frank

Here's what happened exactly. I've been using taskcoach on my new computer for about 2 weeks now. My battery died last night, long after I'd configured it to save after every change. When I turned on my computer again all the applications started restoring all the files that had been open, except task coach had lost EVERYTHING.

Task Coach saves its settings when you close it. If you have never closed Task Coach in those two weeks and then the application got suddenly killed, Task Coach may not have had a chance to save its settings.
Since you said you had turned on auto saving, the data file should be fine. Simply use File->Open to open it. If you don't remember where you saved it you can use the Windows search feature to search for "*.tsk" files (.tsk is the extension Task Coach uses for its data files).
Please let me know whether that helps?
Thanks, Frank

I also had it set to auto save after every change. And this is the second time this has happened to me. This is so frustrating.

No it does not show a file name.
Yes it opens with the factory settings.
No it does not have a list of recently opened files.
