It should be possible to maximize or minimize windows with a configurable key/mouse combination, e.g. Alt+doubleclick and Alt+rightdoubleclick.

do you know WinMover? It allows to minimize with ALT+"wheel down" and maximize with ALT+"wheel up", really useful feature

The suggested shortcuts from WinMover seem awefully practical and intuitive. Think I'll take those.
