We've only got symlinks. Yup; it's trying to create hardlinks. You should be able to manually fix things by creating the appropriate symlinks. (I assume that the reason why it's using hardlinks is because the authors mainly did development on Minix, which doesn't support symlinks... yes, I agree with you that hardlinks are evil except in specific circumstances.)
