When I try it all seems to work fine.

That 'error exit delayed' message is indicating that tar came across a
non-fatal error further up the file, but could continue --- you have, in =
fact,
successfully reached the end of the archive. If you look for an earlier e=
rror
message you'll probably find a harmless timestamp or ownership warning.
