Dear Funambol Community: Funambol is pleased to announce that Funambol v6.5 is now Generally Available (GA). The software can be downloaded from our web site at http://www.funambol.com/opensource/downloads.php or from the ObjectWeb (OW2) forge at http://forge.objectweb.org/project/showfiles.php?group_id=96. Funambol v6.5 incorporates many new features and improvements, but to just highlight some: - Major "Push" improvements to enable TCP/IP Push Email and PIM on all mobile operator networks - Significantly improved Windows Mobile Plug-in - Significantly improved Java ME Email Client now running on virtually all Nokia, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson handsets (~250 handsets) - Introduction of contact photo synchronization (i.e. contact's photos are now synchronized amongst Outlook, Windows Mobile Plugin, the Portal and many mobile handsets) - Improved time zone handling - Dozens of new synclets for improved synchronization of contacts and calendar with a wider range of handsets - Updated portal sign-up and profile with focus on Mobile Email - High-availability architecture for all of the Funambol server components - Management tools for monitoring the availability and load of the system Most of these features are in the open source Community Edition that can be downloaded now, while some of the more advanced features are in the commercial Carrier Edition. We hope that you find the software to be useful and we look forward to your feedback. Funambol wishes everyone in our community a great holiday season and a fantastic 2008 ahead! Regards, Hal Steger Funambol |

Dear Funambol Community: The following note is of more relevance to people interested in the commercial aspects of Funambol. We have been getting some inquiries about whether Google Android overlaps with Funambol. To answer this question as well as some other questions about how Android and Funambol will affect the adoption of mobile email, we have written a free position paper entitled, "How Google Android Stimulates the Mass Market for Mobile Email and how Funambol Mobile Open Source Monetizes It". If you are interested in reading it, it can be downloaded from the Funambol website at http://www.funambol.com/solutions/library.php. Regards and happy holidays from Funambol, Hal Steger Funambol |

At i-Concept we are following the Funambol developments closely since it changed name from Sync4j. Although we appreciate all the work done in the Funambol community in general and for the iPhone in particular, we are still not sure about using it in a professional environment. For instance, why does the server still not run as a service under Windows? Why is the Calendar not supported in the Sync client for the iPhone. Rgds Albert Bausch |

Dear Funambol Community: We wanted to update you on the status of our support for BlackBerries. We are porting our JAM (Java ME) mobile email client to the Blackberry OS for use on Blackberry devices such as the Pearl and Curve. Please note that this activity requires changes to the JAM client build environment and script to support BlackBerry APIs. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience that this might cause you. We're very excited about enhancing the JAM client to support BlackBerries and as always, we appreciate your support and participation. We expect to release a working version in Q1, 2008. Thanks you and regards, The Funambol Team |

Dear Funambol Community: Funambol today announced that it was adopting the newly released AGPLv3 license for its open source software. This will become effective with the general availability (GA) release of Funambol v6.5, due within a few weeks. Funambol made this change as we believe that AGPLv3 is the appropriate successor license to the Honest Public License (HPL) that we introduced last year. As AGPLv3 is very similar to HPL but has some advantages for the community, such as being compatible with more open source licenses, we believe it is in the best interests of the community to adopt AGPLv3. For more information: * View the press release: http://www.funambol.com/news/pressrelease_2007.11.27.php * Read Funambol CEO Fabrizio Capobianco's blog entry on why we made this change: http://www.funambol.com/blog/capo/2007/11/agpl-and-future-of-open-source.h tml * See the Free Software Foundation website: http://www.fsf.org/licensing/licenses/agpl-3.0.html Regards, Hal Steger Funambol |

Hi Everyone: Funambol is pleased to announce that the beta version of Funambol Community Edition v6 is available for download. This is a significant new release that includes: * Updated Windows Mobile plug-ins for both Windows Mobile SmartPhone and PocketPC devices * Improved Outlook plug-in * New email connector * Server-initiated synchronization of Funambol plug-ins/clients and SIS (server initiated sync) capable devices * Improved system logging * Out-of-the-box PIM database schema (i.e. PIM data does not need to be stored on the filesystem anymore) * VTODO server support * and much more Here are some important notes about this release: 1) Funambol v6 plug-ins are fully compatible with the Funambol v3 server and can be tried without installing the v6 server. Also, v3 plug-ins and connectors work with the v6 server. 2) When installing v6, the v6 bundle has an installer that automates installation on a clean system, though it does not upgrade a v3 system to v6. If you are running Funambol v3, you will need to migrate the v3 data from the filesystem or database to the Funambol v6 database. As always, we recommend that you check out the beta version of Funambol v6 on a clean system using the bundle installer but not put it into production until v6 is Generally Available (GA). 3) There are two other important v6 components that are coming shortly. One is a new Java Mobile Edition push email client that works on mass market handsets such as the Motorola RAZR and Nokia 60 series. It is built on top of a SyncML-based open source Java ME framework that can be used to develop additional Java ME apps. It is open source and is part of Funambol Community Edition. The other is a demo version of a completely redesigned Funambol portal that makes it much easier for end users to set up and manage synchronization of contacts, calendar and email with their mobile phones using Firefox or Internet Explorer browsers. The portal automates registration, over-the-air configuration of mobile devices and the downloading/setup of Funambol plug-ins and clients. The new Funambol portal replaces the current Funambol portal and like the current portal, it is part of Funambol's commercial Carrier Edition offering. More information about these components will be available shortly. The beta version of Funambol Community Edition v6 software can be downloaded from the Funambol website at: <http://www.funambol.com/opensource/downloads.html> http://www.funambol.com/opensource/downloads.html Files can also be downloaded from the ObjectWeb forge by scrolling to the Funambol 6.0 Beta section of the Files tab for the sync4j project at: <http://forge.objectweb.org/project/showfiles.php?group_id=96> http://forge.objectweb.org/project/showfiles.php?group_id=96 Release notes for the beta version of this release are at: <http://www.funambol.com/opensource/Funambolv6BetaReleaseNotes.html> http://www.funambol.com/opensource/Funambolv6BetaReleaseNotes.html Preliminary beta documentation for v6 can be downloaded at: <http://www.funambol.com/opensource/documentation/documents.html> http://www.funambol.com/opensource/documentation/documents.html To provide feedback on the release, please post a note on one of the Funambol (sync4j) mailing lists. Bugs can be reported using the Bugs tracker on the ObjectWeb forge. We hope that you find the Funambol v6 beta software to be interesting and useful, and we look forward to your feedback, -- The Funambol Team |

The Funambol Team is very pleased to announce the General Availability release of Funambol v3.0. You can download the v3.0 GA bundle and individual components here: http://www.funambol.com/opensource/downloads.html ...and see what's changed (from Sync4j v2.3 to Funambol v3.0) here: http://www.funambol.com/opensource/whatsnew3v0stable.html This GA release for Funambol v3.0 marks a significant milestone for Funambol and for the Funambol open source community. Community members have made considerable contributions to this GA release and it shows in the high quality of the software. With the help of the community, Funambol is also striving to increase the reach of software so that it is interoperable with as many applications and services as possible (in response to community demand, the MS Exchange and Lotus Domino Connectors were re-released and are now available). Since the preview release of v3.0 earlier this year, the number of Funambol downloads has doubled to over 600,000. Funambol is putting mobile open source on the map and challenging proprietary mobile email vendors. Thanks to everyone for your ongoing support. Enjoy the software! Just wanted to let everyone know that Funambol's CEO, Fabrizio Capobianco, has a posting on his blog that you all should read (posted less than an hour ago this morning, Pacific Daylight Time). In it, he discusses a proposed modification of GPL v2 to address the "ASP loophole", effectively creating the first draft of the Honest Public License (HPL). Funambol will leave this draft open for community comments and feedback for the next 30 days. As members of the Funambol Open Source Community, you all can have a voice to influence this change. We want to hear from you and hope you will take some time to give your feedback on this important issue. Here's a link to the blog posting: http://www.fabcapo.com/ Best regards, Jason Finkelstein Funambol Community Manager ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ funambol :: mobile open source http://www.funambol.com |

The Funambol Project Team is pleased to announce that v3.0 beta 5 has been released. You can download beta 5 here: http://www.funambol.com/opensource/downloads.html ...and see what's new in beta 5 here: http://www.funambol.com/opensource/whatsnew3v0beta5.html One of the first things you'll notice when you go to download is that the download page has been redesigned. This new page is a significant improvement over the old one for the following reasons: + better organized with better navigation and more intuitive page design + functionality of server bundles is now highlighted and easier to find + back revs of all components are easier to find + easier to associate components with each release (and, therefore, to understand compatibilities) We hope you like and benefit from the new design and welcome your feedback (feel free to send any comments directly to me). Something else that I think is important to mention regarding the v3.0 beta 5 release - there were a record number of bugs fixed in this release. So, not only is quality continuing to improve, but it's improving at an impressive pace. I have no doubt this was made possible by the community's active participation in the Bag-a-Bug Program. The BaB Program is ongoing and you should check out the current leaders / contributors at your convenience - http://www.funambol.com/opensource/bag-a-bugprogram.html Every day brings us closer to the v3.0 stable release. Hello, last minute notice to let you know that tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10 am PDT I will give a free webinar on how to build mobile applications with Funambol and MySQL. If you are interested, the URL is http://www.mysql.com/news-and-events/web-seminars/mysql-funambol.php Below, you find the abstract. Cheers, fabrizio -- Synchronizing MySQL-based applications with Mobile Devices July 11, 2006 Syncing information between databases and mobile devices is a key issue facing the wireless data industry. Without better syncing across a range of devices, data will continue to be stored in back-end systems, unusable or unleveraged. The mobile application market is dependent on seamless data synchronization. The open source project Funambol - the largest mobile open source project with more than 500,000 downloads - extends to mobile the capabilities of any database solution. With its DB Connector and native integration with MySQL, data can be synchronized on every mobile device. Applications on devices can be built using both Java (J2ME and J2SE) and C++. With native connectors to SugarCRM, Exchange and Domino, Funambol is the platform of choice to synchronize data, contacts, calendars, and email on nearly any mobile device, including more than 700 million devices today. Funambol CEO Fabrizio Capobianco will illustrate how to integrate SyncML, MySQL, and Funambol's mobile application server to synchronize email, calendar and contact info, and customer-defined MySQL data to PDAs and mobile phones. The discussion will include guidance on where to use off-the-shelf code, and where the user (or the community) needs to develop or extend custom functionalities. |

We're one month into the Funambol Bag-a-Bug Program and are proud to announce that the community is stepping up. Many bug reports have been submitted and the first round of rewards has been distributed to the biggest bug contributors. With the recent bustle on the community mailing lists, I think the Bag-a-Bug Program is proving to be a step in the right direction. When the community contributes by finding bugs, it helps drive a higher quality product which can ultimately be re-released back to the community... certainly this has all the makings of a virtuous cycle where everyone benefits. You can see the current bug finding rankings here: http://www.funambol.com/opensource/bag-a-bugprogram.html Right now, it seems that "pohly" is running away with it and will win the PSP if he maintains this lead for another 2 months. But, there is still plenty of time to catch him (and plenty of bugs I suspect, too). ;-) Best regards, Jason Finkelstein Funambol Community Manager ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ funambol :: mobile open source http://www.funambol.com |
