Next step is start using cobbler to create your physicals machines (you need to install koan too to create virtual machines using symbolic). In the "new machine form" Symbolic asks you for mac address of machine you want to create (the mac address of the interface you are using to connect to the network if your machine has more than one interface). You can't provide/install OS without specifying the mac address because is the only information cobbler can use to identify you machine over the network. Naturally may attention about mac address you will insert in this box because you can format and re-install an operating system over a wrong machine! :) Bye Marco > > Regards. > > 2009/9/16 Marco Mornati <mmo...@by... > <mailto:mmo...@by...>> > > Maybe we are talking about to a different checkbox. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi Stas, sorry for the delay in my answer. All ok? to use cobbler you need to add to Symbolic a cobbler machine. To do this you can Symbolic create a "new machine" (also if you don't have func installed on cobbler machine) and set all required information (hostname, name, ...). During creation you have to check the property "provide provisioning" and from that moment you will see the new machine in the provisioning combobox during new machine creation. I'm not sure if you have the checkbox "provide provisioning" directly during creation of the machine or if you have to create it and then edit again to see this and other properties. Try, but it's simple. Naturally, if you want, you can create a cobbler machine like a "symbolic minion/client", so you can install and configure func, sign the certificate and the you will see the new machine directly added to Symbolic. What you have to do is just edit the machine properties and check "provide provisioning". Hope this help. Let me know if you have other problems. Hello Stas, sorry for the delay in our answer but it's a vacation time for all of us! :) I'll try to explain to the remaining questions. > > Does Symbolic assign the macaddress to a profile? No Symbolic does not assign "automatically" a mac address to a cobbler profile. When you are creating a new machine you have to select a Cobbler profile (so the operating system with all setttings you have done in your cobbler server) and then a max address, so the physical machine you want to provision. The mac address is not associated to the profile but, naturally, to your machine. > > Or I need to specify the mac in the cobbler separately? How then I > link between the cobbler and Symbolic? If you haven't make any important entry in the database, you can try to delete db and let symbolic to recrete it. Hi. Is it possible to provision and manage physical machines via genome, without the VM aspect? I'm looking for a good way to provision a physical server, then manage it via Puppet. Regards. |

Hello there, The last few months there were many people who were asking me whether Fedora has a cloud computing solution for mass deploy of FEL. Some of these people were from big commercial EDA companies looking for opensource solutions. There was even a meeting around a table in US recently about cloud computing and electronic design tools. Currently, I see symbolic/func the only solution which satisfies the current demands of the EDA market with these minimum features: - virtualization - web based administration for those virtual machines - extra quick deployment of RHEL/fedora Do you have an uptodate powerpoint presentations which I can forward to those people ? Maybe if they are interested your company can benefit from it. Now coming back to FEL, my laptops do not support virtualisation can you please create a clone of your youtube video deploying FEL ? I would send that screencast to the next Design and Automation Conference in US as a publicity for both FEL and symbolic/func. Kind regards, Chitlesh |

Surely when we will be ready to release the next version of symbolic, we will have tons of guide and examples to write a plugin for symbolic. Have you got any idea about different languages integration? > - Makes it easy to somehow integrate existing applications and opensource > software in Symbolic with some kind of "connectors" that permit the > integration of them inside Symbolic interface (thinking about projects > like Nagios, Cacti, Puppet and so on). Yes... the main idea is also to have the main engine of Symbolic as a plugin (I mean func)... so you can change the machine communication language (if you want). At the moment we already have a "standard" way to communicate with symboic using xmlrpc... I know that it's not a solution for all programs communication. To make a complete integration with an external tool I think will be necessary to write a translation layer between symbolic and, for example, puppet. Is what we have done with func too. Symbolic does not know that the engine is func... he just call an "external engine plugin" (called func-bindings) that make the two way translation between the two programs. Surely should be possible to do the same things with all other programs!! Thanks again Have a nice day Marco > > Just some (obvious) ramblings... > > All the best and keep up the great work > Alessandro > > > Hi everybody, > > we are starting making some example for the next generation of Symbolic > application. Hi Marco, a plugin architecture for Symbolic is definitively a good things. In order to ease community support and modules I would try to offer a structure that: - Makes it easy to add a plugin for users (for example , drop your module in a directory and, following some defined standards, it gets automagically loaded and used in the different parts of the main application. - Makes it easy to create plugins for developers, with clear guidelines, possible a barebone module example and, if possible, with the possbility of adding plugins written in different languages (am I asking too much?) - Makes it easy to somehow integrate existing applications and opensource software in Symbolic with some kind of "connectors" that permit the integration of them inside Symbolic interface (thinking about projects like Nagios, Cacti, Puppet and so on). Just some (obvious) ramblings... All the best and keep up the great work Alessandro > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- > Hash: SHA1 > > Hi everybody, > > we are starting making some example for the next generation of Symbolic > application. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi everybody, we are starting making some example for the next generation of Symbolic application. I want to share with you our idea about it and ask to everybody if could be good or if you have any other (better) idea. What we want to make is a modular application (at the moment the programming language is not so important... so you can partecipate to the concept with what you want ;)). So Symbolic should be a simple "core" and all other functions will be added with "plugins". What the "core" surely know and could do is "making activity with other machine" (like the current version)... but all features (for example virtual machine controller; cluster capability; ...) must be something that we could make external. Any plugin could "inject" some functions on "existing" pages or "business class"... so, for example, if I add the "cluster plugin" I could see in admin menu a new voice to controll cluster, on machine creation I'll have a new combo box and a new voice in the combo to define the type of machine. What I'm working on at the moment is a way to extend the java base classloader to create a structure like I've described in this mail. If any of you has any idea about what I proposed and/or wants to propose a simple "pluginable" application (python, groovy, java, perl(:S), ...) is welcome!! :) Let me know what do you think about this idea and specially if you have ideas!!! Reading your Catalina log, it seems you have problems contacting on of your minion. If you can't find any operation in symbolic... what I can suggest is to remove (temporary) the not reachable minion from func and re-try again. As I said I'm trying to rewrite all bootstrap sequence to prevent these problems... any report could be useful to find all problems type.
