Symbio 1.7 has finally been released. Among the new features are full TrackBack support and an improved RSS feed. As always, upgrade instructions can be found on the homepage.
I have released Symbio 1.7a, a pre-release of version 1.7, as I am not yet certain when I will have the time to continue development. Don't worry, I'm not talking years, I just felt it'd long enough since the last release. If you don't trust this one, you can always use version 1.6.1 instead; however, I always use the latest version myself at http://blog.ct.xanoo.com/ so I guess you can trust it.
As it turns out, users of Internet Explorer are unable to post comments in 4 themes included with Symbio 1.6, including the default. Please upgrade to version 1.6.1 to fix this!
Symbio 1.6 is out, with exciting new features such as IP banning and themable statistics, plus lots of tweaks for your convenience. Got a blog? Then you'll definitely want this commenting system. It's got lots of cool features, including themes, multi-language support, smileys, text styling and statistics, and best of all, it's free software! (Written in perl)
Enjoy!

A little bug in Symbio 1.5 just sprung up: To allow visitors to vote after you've recreated an existing poll, or appended a new poll to an article, you will have to change line 23 of the file cp_pollconfiguration.pl to:
print POLL time, "\n$question\n$VAL{'private'}\n";
Sorry for the inconvenience.
I'm really excited about this new version of Symbio! Among the new features are polls and a totally redesigned control panel. May the force be with you!
A couple of users were complaining about the wait until Symbio 1.5 - which would fix the JavaScript bug with MSIE - so I decided to release an updated version 1.4. A minor security fix was also performed (updating is recommended!) and as an extra treat, 3 cool new themes are included.
It's here! Symbio 1.4 is now available, packed with cool new features, including badword filters and window positioning.
This minor bugfix release fixes problems with opening the smiley toggle popup on some browsers, due to an overlooked piece of code.
Symbio 1.3.1 is now available. The only file different from the 1.3 version is index.cgi, to fix the main popup when no comments are available. Symbio 1.3 users can get an upgrade package.
Some themes, including the default, display incorrectly when no comments have been posted for an article. To fix this, overwrite your index.cgi with this file: http://symbio.sourceforge.net/patch1.3/index.txt
I am currently using a university computer and cannot provide an updated package yet, but I shall do so later today.
Symbio 1.3 is now available. It's a lot faster than previous releases, fixes some latent bugs and includes more internationalization and theme features.
A rather nasty bug was found in the control panel, so I decided to fix it and release a new version. There aren't any big changes outside the control panel, but I recommend upgrading anyway. If you've got Symbio 1.2.x, just overwriting the 5 script files should do.
Symbio 1.2 has a bug that causes it to display the wrong text with various themes. If you have already installed version 1.2, you will only need to overwrite your index.cgi with the one from the 1.2.1 package. Otherwise, just install this new package as described at http://symbio.sourceforge.net/docs/ .
After a month or two of inactivity (due to exams), Symbio 1.2 is now available. I'm sure you will enjoy the new features it's equipped with! See http://symbio.sourceforge.net/docs/ for more information.
Blago provided Symbio with a Bulgarian language pack. Users of this pack will probably need to make a minor change in Symbio's source, since another character set is required. The next version of Symbio will not require this hack.
You can now use Symbio in German by using the German language pack, courtesy of Christian Marker.
You may want to replace Symbio's smileys (contained in all Symbio distributions currently available) with the ones found at http://symbio.sourceforge.net/smileys.tar.gz. This new smiley package contains updated versions of the old smileys, which will look smooth on any background color.
Dan (stern_shanks) released the Spanish language pack today. Note that it works with both version 1.1a and 1.1.
Symbio 1.1 is now available for download. When upgrading, note that your old themes will not work. Version 1.1a language files are fully compatible with this release.
Thanks to Stian (stianh on SF), Norwegian users can now download Symbio in their native language.
Maybe I'm being presumptuous, but after making significant changes to the source today, I felt it was time to release a new version. Since the entire theming concept has changed, it would be lame to let people create a version 1.0 theme when the version 1.1 theming system is ready. While I haven't tested every feature, I'm pretty confident there won't be much trouble with this release - but if you find a bug, please let me know. For more information about this release, consult http://symbio.sourceforge.net/docs/.
Symbio 1.1 will have a new, more versatile theme format. While the implementation of backward compatibility is not planned, upgrading your theme to version 1.1 will be relatively easy. And if you can't do it, I'm here to help.
The first final version of Symbio is now available. With it comes full theming and multi-language support. I'm looking for people who are willing to translate Symbio into their own language, as well as theme designers. You'll find all the information you need at http://symbio.sourceforge.net/ and http://symbio.sourceforge.net/docs/ (documentation).
