Yay!!! Cvs is up!!! Sorry Vanders, my best friend(I was the best man :) ) got married today and I have been away until now. Tommorrow I will definately upload the new desktop :). I still have to learn how to upload some more with cvs, but I think I can figure it out :). Since I am the lead developer for the Desktop and basic applications, I started a list of what should be included with Syllable. Tell me if this anything is wrong or if these are good ideas!!! Also tell me if I am stepping out of line. o All preferences should have their own application IE: To configure fonts have one application and to configure colors of everything another application. The should be accessible from Launcher(Under Preferences) or by a seperate application(IE: Control Panel). o Desktop with Launcher as a start menu should be included.into the base system o AView should be included into the base system o Archiver should be included into the base system o AEdit should be included into the base system. o Launcher and LBrowser should be included into the base system. o CodeEdit and CodeView should be included into the base system. o Whisper should be included into the base system. o Juggler(gpl version) should be included into the base system. o All Applications should be in /Applications/<program name> and should have a symlink in /Applications/<program name>/bin(for terminal access) Please feel free to scrutinize, yell, or make adjustments to my suggestions :). Heck, I love to hear other peoples opinions. Rick Caudill Development Website: http://students.cup.edu/cau0730 |

Cool :) I hope it was a great day :) How did your speech go? ;) > Tommorrow I will definately upload the new desktop :). Try the CVS Redbook (Its linked from the "Resources" page on the website) > Since I am the lead developer for the Desktop and basic applications, I > started a list of what should be included with Syllable. We want open development here; all suggestions are welcome! :) > o All preferences should have their own application > IE: To configure fonts have one application and to configure colors > of everything another application. This should be fairly easy to do as well; most of the current code is self contained. > o Desktop with Launcher as a start menu should be included.into the base > system > > o AView should be included into the base system > > o Archiver should be included into the base system > > o AEdit should be included into the base system. > > o Launcher and LBrowser should be included into the base system. > > o CodeEdit and CodeView should be included into the base system. > > o Whisper should be included into the base system. > > o Juggler(gpl version) should be included into the base system. The list looks good to me, apart from the inclusion of CodeView, CodeEdit & Juggler. Those are really development applications, and I personally feel it would be better to keep all development packages away from the "Base" distro. For now , it may be best to limit ourselves with which packages we include, at least until we get CD-ROM installs. The current 0.3.9alpha tarballs do not include ABrowse, for example. If we leave out ABrowse in 0.4.0 final, then we'll have to leave out Whisper as well. Once we have CD-ROM installs (Come on William! ;) ) then yes, Internet tools should be installed by default, and all developer packages should be availble if the user wants to install them :) > o All Applications should be in /Applications/<program name> and should > have a symlink in /Applications/<program name>/bin(for terminal > access) It should be possible to link from /Applications/foo/bin to /autolnk/bin with pkgmanager just as you do with /usr/ packages. I havn't tried this, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work. > Please feel free to scrutinize, yell, or make adjustments to my suggestions > > :). Try the CVS Redbook (Its linked from the "Resources" page on the > website) Well all of the desktop is uploaded :)(I think). That Redbook is cool, but Tortoise CVS for Windows is cooler :). I hate using command line apps :). And CVS is not that bad once you get the hang of it :). > > Since I am the lead developer for the Desktop and basic applications, I > > started a list of what should be included with Syllable. Especially without cdrom support/ > For now , it may be best to limit ourselves with which packages we include, > at least until we get CD-ROM installs. I understand completely, but maybe we should make a seperate tarball for those apps then??? > Once we have CD-ROM installs (Come on William! ;) ) then yes, Internet tools > should be installed by default, and all developer packages should be availble > if the user wants to install them :) I get ya!!! Since we want this to be a desktop operating system; then we need it to act like a desktop operating system :). That means if the average user wants no developer tools then thats what they want :). > > o All Applications should be in /Applications/<program name> and should > > have a symlink in /Applications/<program name>/bin(for terminal > > access) > It should be possible to link from /Applications/foo/bin to /autolnk/bin with > pkgmanager just as you do with /usr/ packages. Actually, having been shopping & thinking, should we add ACalc or Albert to that list? What about AClock (Although Launcher has a digital clock, doesn't it?) -- Vanders http://www.shagged.org/~vanders/ |

What about AClock (Although Launcher has a digital clock, doesn't > it?) Yeah, We should add one or the other! Which one though? I like ACalc, because of the colors, but Albert is more advanced. I say we go with Albert. What do you think? I say that AClock should be included. Launcher does have a digital clock as a plugin, but it has a bug. If you have only one item in Launcher(the application menu) and you move the clock above or below Launcher; the whole application freezes. If the clock in Launcher is buggy, then yeah, we should include AClock. It needs a few quick changes so that it remembers its settings etc., but don't let that stop you checking in a copy. By the way, the commit worked; I've already updated the Makefile ;) -- Vanders http://www.shagged.org/~vanders/ |
