Saturday July 25 in the Netherlands. We will be sailing again on the 
Frisian vessel the Stêd Sleat while discussing and demoing the Syllable

[Syllable-developer] Builder switched over from /usr/ to /resources/

We are migrating the resource packages from the /usr/ directory to the 
new /resources/ directory. The latter is a symlink to the former on 
Syllable Desktop 0.6.6 and Syllable Server 0.3. Eventually, it will be a 
separate directory, leaving only legacy content for backwards 
compatibility in /usr/. To get there, all resource packages will need to 
be compiled into the /resources/ directory. I now switched Builder over 
to do that, including many build recipes that are referring to the path 
explicitly.

If you are still using Builder on Syllable 0.6.5, either don't update 
Builder or create the new /resources/ symlink yourself.

[Syllable-developer] Tooltip class

I have been doing some work on the dock and the tooltips were really starting to annoy me since they did not have borders around them. Setting the sunken edge property for them just does not look quite right to me. I think it needs a solid black border around them. I wonder if anyone would object to me coming up with a tooltip class for libsyllable. It looks like to me the best class to base this on would be the Stringview class. Any thoughts on this? Is there already plans on some different scale for this?

Hi all,

0.6.6 basic iso booted and installed fine in Qemu (Project Q) but  
would not boot in Parallels 4 under any of the grub options.
I may try and put it on a "real" computer soon, and I'll let you know  
how that goes ;)

Nice to see more progress.

Its still takes hours to install on my gigabyte ep35c motherboard so it ends up being aborted. It has done this on other versions as well so i expect its a weird motherboard. The Jmicron ide controller i believe has created problems in other Non Windows OSes.

Maybe next release.

I tried again and told Fusion not to upgrade the VM and Syllable booted to
the desktop very quickly.

There seems to be some problem that slows down Syllable in the VM though.

Clicking on the Welcome.html takes about 20 seconds to launch the browser
window.

Er, yes it should. Sorry!

While we're at it Michael has noticed that the current upgrade package
will overwrite the existing GRUB menu.lst and passwd file. I am
repacking the upgrade now to fix this issue and I will re-upload it to
Sourceforge. If you plan to upgrade and think this may be an issue
please wait and hour before you download the upgrade package.

I am very proud and very very happy to announce the release of Syllable
0.6.6 at long last!

This has been the longest, most difficult release we have ever overseen,
and I'd like to say a huge, massive thank you to Kaj and Anthony for
their help and support, to every single person who has contributed to
making this release happen, and of course to everyone in the community
to continuing to support Syllable even when things have been very quiet.

The highlights of this release include:

o A new web browser based on a newer version of the Webkit rendering
  engine.
o Support for running virtual machines inside of Qemu
o Improved installation and upgrade processes
o Improved POSIX compatability
o The usual clutch of bug fixes and enhancements.

You can download Syllable 0.6.6 now from various sources, the links to

An upgrade from the previous release and a pre-configured VMWare image

checks to fail.
 o Added kernel boot parameters to get_system_info(), raising
SYS_INFO_VERSION to 4
   o Removed old get_system_info() code for versions 1 & 2
 0 Added kernel parameter printk_max=n to limit boot messages
 o Fixed alignment check in descriptors.c as pointed out by c0x.
 o Export get_bool_arg() properly from the kernel and remove the

   o Re-wrote sys_alarm() to use the POSIX ITIMER_REAL timer instead of
it's own list. The send_signal_alarms() function has been completely
removed.
 o Never return -EINTR from tcp_connect()
 o Make fcntl() F_SETLK more standards compliant. A process can now call
F_SETLK for a region which it already holds another lock on, and the
existing lock will be replaced or adjusted to acomodate the new lock.

Appserver
 o Added 'Swap left & right mousebuttons' pref to appserver; thanks to

 o Fixed Winter, Blue and Warpspeed decorators.

 o Make lsattribs and dumpattribs work with read-only filesystems.

Localisation and Internationalisation
 o Added Russian translation of the welcome document, from Alexander

Try changing the 'Default hardware compatibility' to 'Workstation 6' in the
virtual machine settings. If that doesn't fix it, please report back!

Did you change the virtual machine settings or choose 'Upgrade virtual
hardware' or similar before booting? We had hoped that the VMWare image
would automatically use the older virtual hardware version...

VirtualBox requires the additional kernel arguments

disable_smp=true disable_pci_irq_routing=true

"enable_ata_dma=false" might speeds things up in VirtualBox but I'm not
sure it makes much difference. Section 5 of the FAQ covers using
Syllable on various virtual machines and is updated as and when we
receive new information, so it's generally quite accurate.

However, on real hardware it should be very nice!

Congratulations!

I've just given the VMWare image a spin in Virtual Box. It worked out of 
the box and didn't freeze or crash until I shutdown the machine. It may 
be a problem of running in Virtual Box, but launching programs in 
particular was very, very slow. I am almost tempted to install it on 
real hardware just to see how it feels in comparison. Nice work!

Thanks. The list isn't as long as it could be given the length of time
we've been working on 0.6.6, but the smaller changes have added up to a
very nice release. Anyone who has tried one of the late development
builds/RCs would have noticed that it feels much more solid than 0.6.5.

symlink.

 o Introduced a symlink /resources/ to /usr/. This will serve the
migration in the coming time of resource packages to /resources/, which

content of /usr/ (Unix System Resources).
 o Added a number of extra GrUB entries to the install CD for hardware
testing, known emulator configurations and serial debugging.
 o Make lsattribs and dumpattribs work with read-only filesystems.

Localisation and Internationalisation
 o Added Russian translation of the welcome document, from Alexander
"azlk".

Thanks. The code looks good to me, but you're right that it shouldn't be
in the header. However I'm not sure where it *should* go. Perhaps it's
time we moved all the common code such as this into a new libdock?

Thoughts anyone?

P.S: Work on 0.6.6 is on-going: check the Bugs section on the forum to
get a handle on the last remaining issues. Testing & feedback of the
current build would be helpful if anyone has a spare hour.

Vanders *and* Kristian? Vanders, Kaj, Anthony & Dee are all pretty busy
still, but we're mostly either working or on the AltMe world. The forums
have remained pretty busy too.

As I'm here, an update on 0.6.6: we're still working on it. Most of the
worst issues are now solved and all that remains is to fix the last few
build failures and give it a test. Sadly 0.6.6 has been a very drawn out
process for various reasons, but the main one the usual lack of
developer resources. So, it's been a struggle, but we'll get there, and
I hope you can all excuse my lack of communication on the issue while we
work to get 0.6.6 ready!
