    DarnF - 2022-01-19

    Hi,
I am working with a large international company and would like to use SwiftSearch to scan our central file servers for different reporting tasks.
As SwiftSearch is distributed under the "Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License V2.0", I am not allowed to use it.

What would a commercial license cost?

    N.B:
There is another topic with similar title "Commercial using", but this topic covers including parts of source code, whereas I do not want to modify it, only to use.

    Thanks

Hi there! Thank you for reaching out!

I actually haven't yet established a general commercial license or pricing model (though I may do so as I see recent interest!), but I'm of course happy to license it on a case-by-case basis for your company.

If you could please read the following and message me directly with the aforementioned information so I can understand your intended use, I'd be grateful & more than happy to discuss potential options:

      1. Will you need the license to include any kind of ongoing support, bug fixes, version upgrades, etc.? Or are you solely looking for a license to use one of the existing published versions as-is (regardless of potential bugs/defects/etc.)?

      2. Approximately how many machines + people will the software be used by? Note, if this is an unclear question for your use case (for example, if only 1 person will run the software, but serve the results to 1000s of employees), then I would appreciate it if you could also clarify information related to that. (I don't need exact numbers for now—I just need to understand if these numbers might be roughly 1, 5, 20, 100, 500, etc.)

      3. Are you looking for any particular rights besides running the program on certain machines? (For example, transferability or redistribution to other machines/employees/companies/etc.)

      4. Do you expect any kinds of implied or express warranties/liability/etc. from me?

      To elaborate on #4:
While it is obviously important to me personally to (for example) avoid liability in case of bugs, it may be particularly important for yourself too—depending on your use case—for the following reason:
This kind of program is intrinsically "best-effort" and (even in the hypothetical absence of bugs) fundamentally cannot guarantee correct operation. For example, if the filesystem is modified while the program is reading the disk, then it may behave unexpectedly (including, but not limited to, entire files/directories disappearing/duplicating/etc., perhaps silently).
While this might be an uncommon occurrence on a personal computer, it may be more likely to occur on (for example) a server that is under active load/use, such as in your use case. Moreover, if your business requires the search results to be guaranteed correct or consistent (especially for legal/contractual/financial/etc. reasons), then it is likely to be entirely unable to meet your needs.

If you believe the program would suit your use case, please message me with the above details and I'll be more than happy to try & work something out.

Thank you again for reaching out & happy new year!
