Hi Chris, thanks for reporting this. It's really strange that nobody has requested it so far. I added a workaround that works fine here but it will be great if you can give me feedback how it works on your side. Is there any way to use SWFAddress with IE if the main page sets document.domain? It seems IE locks down access to the document if document.domain is set, causing most of SWFAddress' functionality to throw "Access Denied" exceptions. I am wondering if there's any work-around for this. Thanks, Chris |

Hi Noticed an issue with Firefox only. Hitting the return key updates SWFAddress without refreshing the browser. Hitting the return key in Safari always refreshes the browser. It seems that a browser refresh is needed however, since the browser URLS in Firefox don't update correctly afterwards. Has anyone else encountered this and is there a workaround? -- [c] 416.668.0034 [w] www.tweetmasher.com -------------------------------------------- "...all improvisation is life in search of a style." - Bruce Mau,'LifeStyle' |

The redirect will work as you have described it if you use the SEO sample. If you use the plain JavaScript functionality you'll have to make a redirect from /aerial/ to http://www.mydomain.com/#/how-do-you-catch-big-air-on-the-moon but it may get tricky and I'm not sure how well it will be treated by Google. Hello, I have updated from a website that did not use swfaddress to a site that will use swfaddress. I am confused about how to handle the permanent redirects. For example, if an old url was http://www.mydomain.com/aerial/ and the new url is http://www.mydomain.com/#/how-do-you-catch-big-air-on-the-moon, what should the line in the htaccess file look like? Like this? redirect 301 /aerial/ http://www.mydomain.com/how-do-you-catch-big-air-on-the-moon Thank you, James E. |

Hi Ztripez, you can probably understand how the sample works from the code and I highly recommend you to get the latest version from the SVN. Some general information about the SEO is available at http://www.asual.com/blog/swfaddress/2007/11/15/swfaddress-2-pt3-ajax-and-seo.html The issue you're experiencing is probably due to the fact that the base path needs to be changed in the .htaccess file. Hi there I'm new to this list. I'm working as a PHP developer on a project that needs SEO with flash and I was recommended to checkout swfaddress and the samples is very promising. However I've tried to check the source on the SEO-sample and I can't really figure out how the whole thing works, but that's just a minor problem. My big problem is if I copy the /samples/seo to a diffrent-folder or try to make my own, I get a 404 on the sub-pages (with flash disabled to see the "bot"-pages). However if I run it from the samples-folder it works fine. So can anyone explain to me what is needed to make it work on you own "setup"? I can't find any .htaccess or anything else that captures the sub-links. Getting very frustating. Sincerely Ztripez |

Hi Rostislav: (I copied the example SEO site verbatim to my server to troubleshoot the problems I'm having): http://www.thalamusdesign.com/test2/ I have got everything to work with the SEO example except the following: 1) Not writing HTML code from datasource.php to index.php. The data is there: http://www.thalamusdesign.com/test2/datasource.php?swfaddress=/about/ 2) The swfaddress parameter in the opening script tag stays at the default value: swfaddress-optimizer.js?flash=8&swfaddress=%2F I checked with my web host company and allow_url_fopen is ON. Any other suggestions? I'm so close! Thanks, Thom |

Hi Thom, the main problem of the link you sent is that all the external resources like swfobject.js and swfaddress.js should use absolute paths instead of relative ones. This means that <script type="text/javascript" src="swfaddress.js"></script> should become <script type="text/javascript" src="/swfaddress.js"></script> Also have in mind that the flash=8&swfaddress=%2Famp;base=%2F part should be dynamically created by the PHP script, it should not be a hard coded string. Hi Rostislav: I fixed my problem with the double loading by moving the SWFAddress code to the main menu level and not call the loadMovieNum function for the home page. The basic deep linking is working fine; trying now to implement the SEO. When I take the anchor out to see if a search engine could find the dynamic address, it loads the page with the alternate content and ignores the CSS, which is in a separate file. Seems like it doesn't call the SWFObject or load the CSS file. http://www.foxbendiowa.com changed to root level for base, thus: src="swfaddress-optimizer.js?flash=8&swfaddress=%2Famp;base=%2F" .HTACCESS is as follows: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> # Enables mod_rewrite RewriteEngine on # Sets the base folder for SEO optimizer RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule .* index.html </IfModule> -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: tha...@mc... > > Hi Rostislav: > > Is there a way to call the onChange function only when you setValue and not when > the site loads? > > This is my example: > foxbendiowa.com/test.html > > This site uses external SWFs. if you use a case state to compare what is being loaded, you can ignore the initial load and only load the subsequent direct calls, and get it to work correctly. you have the onChange-value at your disposal which you can test against. hope that helps! seb. tha...@mc... wrote: > Hi Rostislav: > > Is there a way to call the onChange function only when you setValue and not when the site loads? > > This is my example: > foxbendiowa.com/test.html > > This site uses external SWFs. Hi Rostislav: Is there a way to call the onChange function only when you setValue and not when the site loads? This is my example: foxbendiowa.com/test.html This site uses external SWFs. The HTML loads a parent movie, which uses loadMovieNum to load a main menu movie, which in turn uses loadMovieNum to load the home page. I use preloaders at each stage. The Flash navigation is centralized in the parent movie. The deep link values are defined in the main menu. I have setValue inside the main menu button release function, and the onChange function outside the release function, like your Flash example. The problem is on site enter, the home page loads TWICE, first when onChange is called, and then with the loadMovieNum function. You should be able to see the white tab pop up twice. If I place the onChange function INSIDE the main menu button release function, the double loading problem is fixed, but the page titles don't update correctly. If I leave onChange outside the button release and comment out the loadMovieNum function, the home page doesn't load at all. -- Thom Ancell Thalamus Interactive Design, LLC |

Hi Patrick, thanks for the creative input. I see your points, but the project is in a mature state and I don't want to introduce such dramatic changes. There is a reason behind every aspect of the API and I will try to explain: SWFAddress started as a simple "value add functionality" on top of ExternalInterface. I like the static ExternalInterface API and therefore I made SWFAddress in the same way. From the beginning SWFAddress provides an uniform API for AS1, AS2, AS3 and JS so every technique used was somehow achievable in all these versions of the class. The event listeners were not added for AS1, but the SWFAddressEvent ensured that at least the rest of the implementations can have exactly the same API. It's very likely that in the future versions of the package we'll add INTERNAL_CHANGE and EXTERNAL_CHANGE events. In the past other people also asked why the Singleton is not used. It's a nice pattern, but the end user needs to write a little bit more code just because of it. With SWFAddress I want to achieve the simplest possible usage scenarios with as less code as possible. If a line can be dropped from the end user code I do anything to make it possible. I think this is one of the keys to the SWFAddress success and it's more important than the size of the AS class or the JS file or the use of design patterns. The new swfobject implementation also uses static methods in exactly the same way. I don't remember exactly why I added the onInit event, but it's purpose is to setup something before the real onChange event. The onChange naming is probably a little misleading, but on the other hand it's good to have a single place to put all your navigation logic stuff. It may have some drawbacks when the things are complex, but usually the developers that work on such projects know how to handle such situations. On the other hand a single onChange piece of code is perfect for designers and not that good ActionScripters that are probably the largest SWFAddress user base. BLITZ is one of the first large SWFAddress adopters and your feedback is important. Unfortunately due to API uniformness and backwards compatibility I cannot change the implementation just like this. For now probably the best solution is to make a SWFAddressWrapper that exposes the exact API that you need. For future SWFAddress major releases we can leave the topic open and I hope that others may also provide their opinions. Hi, I optimized the package even a little more today. I deleted SWFAddressEvent and used Event.Change instead. That custom event is not needed since you can always get the values off SWFAddress anyway, so it makes the API slimmer and easier to use. Download the updated zip file at : http://patrick.blitzagency.com/uploads/cs3.zip Suggested use when your website load is : updateNavigation(); SWFAddressEvent.addEventListener(Event.CHANGE, changeHandler); function updateNavigation():void{ var value:String = SWFAddress.instance.getValue(); //do whatever you need to do ex.: gotoAndStop(value.substr(1)); } function changeHandler(e:Event):void{ updateNavigation(); } Ultimately, SWFAddress could remain a static class instead of a singleton if you want to keep a similar API. But I think that the interval checking for an event listener to be added should definitely be removed along with the SWFAddressEvent. The change event should never be fired unless the SWFAddress value is actually changed. BLITZ | Patrick Matte 310-551-0200 x214 From: swf...@li... Subject: [swfaddress-users] SWFAddress optimizations I have made a few optimizations to SWFAddress.as for AS3. 0.5Kb less is not a lot of course... but I think it is worth it. I don't like how the events work in SWFAddress. First, the init event is useless. Second, The change event should not fire on init. If you're gonna add a change event, it should only fire when the value is actually changed. I think SWFAddress should just made into a singleton instead of a static class. Hello. I'm noticing a problem with swfaddress in firefox 2 on mac and pc. You can reproduce it by following these steps: goto: http://www.asual.com/swfaddress/samples/flash/#/about/ and then click on portfolio and then contact. Then click the back button once. You are now on portfolio. Then click on contact. Now display the drop down menu on your back button. It looks like this: contact about Clicking on contact or simply clicking the back button once takes you to the portfolio page. It should take you to the portfolio page, but the title said "contact". I've been searching for a few hours on this issue and I don't see anyone mentioning it. I've confirmed that safari and ie don't do this. Just on Firefox. |

Regarding the SEO example: Can I append/combine the code in the example's .htaccess file to/with my existing .htaccess file on my server, which already contains important instructions I need for publishing? Could I make the example work with an separate XML or HTML sitemap rather than an "in-line" sitemap as in the example? Thanks. |

Thanks for the info. I'll spend some time on updating the Adobe sample to the new AC_RunActiveContent.js version. hi rostislav, in fact i use the AC_RunActiveContent.js to embed my swf... and unfortunately i have not so good news: i figured out that if i use version 1.0 (which is provided with your "adobe" example) then everything is fine. but if i use version 1.7 (which is provided with flash cs3) then the problem appears. regards DANILO ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rostislav Hristov" <ros...@gm...> To: "SWFAddress Users Discussion List" <swf...@li...> Sent: Saturday, February 02, 2008 10:33 AM Subject: Re: [swfaddress-users] SWfAddress 2.0 - how to set the 'swf ID'ofswfaddress.js manually ? > Hi Danilo, > > I remember your case. > > The new SWFAddress code became a little complicated because now it > supports SWFObject, UFO and the Adobe's AC script. > > The object detection becomes even more tricky because of the behavior > of the different browsers. > > I suppose that your way of embedding is very similar to the Adobe's > one and I'll check why it's not working. > > > Best, > Rostislav > > > > On Feb 1, 2008 9:44 PM, Danilo Sandner <in...@da...> wrote: >> >> >> >> ok sorry, the problem is not to pass the id to the js, >> it is the way the js tries to get the the element with that id.. >> >> ... it seems to be exactly the same issue i stumbled across over one year >> ago: >> http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=005201c7114d%2476bd4d20%240f02a8c0%40NEWDELLI&forum_name=swfaddress-users >> >> within the _swfChange function of the jacascript: >> if i change this line: >> var obj = document.getElementById(id) ; >> >> to this: >> var obj = document[id] || document.getElementById(id) ; >> >> then it works for me... >> >> i thought this "issue" was solved back in that days ?! >> but now it's the same old thing, that's driving me nuts in swfaddress 2.0 >> ?! >> >> is this intentionally like it is in swfaddress 2.0 or is it like this by >> mistake ? >> and is there any other way for me to get it working besides using >> swfobject >> or to manipulate the original swfaddress.js ? >> >> thx >> DANILO >> >> >> >> ----- Original Message ----- >> From: Danilo Sandner >> To: SWFAddress Users Discussion List >> Sent: Friday, February 01, 2008 6:58 PM >> Subject: [swfaddress-users] SWfAddress 2.0 - how to set the 'swf ID' >> ofswfaddress.js manually ? >> >> >> hi there! >> i used to work with swfaddress 1.1 but always without swfobject. >> and i used set the id of my flashfile -in my html doc- manually via >> asual.SWFAddress.setId('flashId'); >> >> now i try to update to swfaddress 2.0 >> and it seems to me like setting the id of the swf manually doesn't work >> like >> this anymore... >> >> i manipulated the _swfChange function in the swfaddress.js with an else >> statement for >> the if(obj) clause. within this else statement i have an alert. >> i get this alert all the time, so i believe swfaddress.js simply doesn't >> now >> anything about the id i try to set... >> >> how can i set this id manually (- without using swfobject to embed my >> swf) ? >> >> thx >> DANILO >> >> >> ________________________________ >> >> >> ------------------------------------------------------------------------- >> This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft >> Defy all challenges.
