Try to find 'esd' or 'pulseaudio' among the running processes and kill it/them. If Sweep then works as its supposed to then that is (an admittedly poor) solution. A better solution might be to enable esd/ pulseaudio and then try to get Sweep to use the dmix output instead of plughw.
