As noted by previous posts the .mat files produced by SWAN appear to be only compatible with
MATLAB itself. I tried reading the files with several software packages including IDL, Octave, Pyhton using scipy
but always got errors. This happens also with the latest SWAN release (40.91).
Here are some of the reading commands I tried

Octave:
a =load(\"-v4\",\"SWANOUT.mat\")
tried also v7 and v6 options

Python:
import scipy.io as sio
a = sio.loadmat(SWANOUT.mat\")

    It is indeed compatible with Matlab only. It was never intended for the use of other packages (e.g. Octave, Python), simply because they are not compatible either. However, developers have always the opportunity to extend SWAN so that it will produced files appropriate for Octave, Python, etc.
