I *think* that the "Tree Conflicts" section of chapter 2 shows examples of this code in action (with a warning about when it won't work).  There might be other places in the book that refer to this functionality, too.

[r4059] reworks the chapter 2 example to not depend on Subversion being smarter than it truly is in 1.7.  I think this was the only reference to the copy-on-update stuff.
