I'd been using Sonic Visualiser for years - very successfully.. , but... After suddenly getting the "Unable to load layer data" error, I fought with Vamp plugin and SV versions, searched and destroyed old DLL's, uninstalled, reinstalled, and cursed. Hours later I solved the problem. I had started using SV to analyze some Greek tunes, with titles transliterated from Greek. Even though the titles appeared to be in Latin characters, one of the characters had a hidden diacritical mark and trying to load that file produced the error. Renaming the file using standard characters was all that was necessary to allow me to proceed. Either the interface could be made to read "special" characters, or there should be a warning on the SV help and FAQ that SV prefers English keyboard characters. Just a thought. Otherwise, CONGRATULATIONS on a very useful program. Spectrograms help me identify which pitches are due to the vocalist when s/he scoops or drops the pitch and all the instruments are playing constant pitches. They also help in adjustment of the general pitch to agree with standard tuning. (This is a real challenge with microtonal Greek music.) Beat and bar analyses are also very useful in analysis of, for instance, Balkan music, where the time signature changes from 3 to 4 (sometimes to 5 or more) and back. I also regularly use several other plugins. |
