"Macromedia has confused the issue by not giving
Shockwave and Flash unique file extension. It refers to swf
files as Shockwave Flash files. So it is not known at a
glance which player is needed to play the file. "
Not quite right - but not your fault either. Macromedia has
developed a compression system called Shockwave and
has allowed both Flash and Director to make use of it. SWF
files are web based flash files using shockwave
compression. DCR files are web based Director programs
using shockwave compression. Macromedia has never
really went out of their way to clarify this and as a Director
programmer it irks me to no end to have to explain that
Direct is not Flash anymore than Excel is MYSQL.
Think of Shockwave kind of like GZIP.
