I was seeing this too on gentoo with 2.6 kernels (manually
patched with supermount, later with -ck patches). Read
performance *very* slow (10x slower), write performance less
problematic.
When subfs is mounted with noatime,nodiratime, read
performance is better, but still about 50% worse than
without supermount.
It would be great if this could be solved somehow (although
I do understand it is difficult)

I still think supermount is great! Please keep up the good work!
