You have certainly touch opon a thorny issue.

Some of the strings in the .po file has changed,
and/or discarded in the application.  However, it is
difficult and tedious to decide if a particular string
in the .po file is used in all the application files.
So the .po file did not get cleaned up.

My translation process was to install the application,
run the application in the target language envionment
you are in, and then see which string is not
translated  and  translate it.  It does need to have
had the application installed and you know how to use
it.

Without installing the application and running it,
translation word for word in the .po file is the only
way to go.

It is a lot of work, and you may want to post in
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=452815
to see if someone else is interested in sharing the
work.
