Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_de.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Folks: It's a tad embarrassing to go into my 'To Process' mailbox for SunDog and see unanswered e-mails dating back 9 months. Sigh. The long answer is that work (see http://bfwa.com) has had me swamped for most of that period. The short answer is that it's been easy to push things off. This particular e-mail is going out to the SunDog resurrection project mailing lists. If you got my earlier e-mail to my private list, then you can ignore this message. First, I have now answered all the e-mails that I have personally received. Second, if you're not yet part of the project itself and would like to be, let me know your SourceForge username and what you'd like to do. Third, if you haven't already, read http://sundog.sourceforge.net/gamedesign/drivers/ to get a sense of what SunDog: Resurrection is and is not trying to do. Fourth, what I need the most at this moment for the project are the following: -- someone who is very familiar and comfortable with SourceForge's source control (CVS) system and who can take charge of that aspect of the project -- someone who wants to manage the project, i.e., add new people to the project, assign roles, privileges, and tasks, track what's getting done, and so on -- someone who wants to help manage the web site (http://sundog.sourceforge.net), both content and format. In short, people who can and will do tasks that I tend to block on. My role will largely be chief game designer and architectural gatekeeper (two things I know I can do well). My apologies for the delays. ..bruce.. Bruce F. Webster (http://bfwa.com) Washington, DC |

Java is the language. The ultimate intent is to make a version that can run (or, at least, be compiled for) Win32/MacOSX/Linux. The current incremental plan is: -- SunDog Navigator (based on the old MAPS function in the original) as a Java app/applet -- a simple SunDog (constrained scope) for PalmOS, so as to focus on game design before eye candy -- moving the same constrained SunDog to Win32/MacOSX/Linux -- staged game enhancements Most of this is on the site (http://sundog.sourceforge.net), but you're comments are well taken; an explicit detailing in one spot would help. ..bruce.. Hi greetings from a Linux/Solaris user here. Are tehy any details on what the language, graphical library (hopefuly) and OS is the project based? Granted that re-do the original version, even PERL could do :> But the space exploration and maybe land exploration bit (heck why not the saloon bits and city too) could benefit from a 3D walkaround, shoot around interface. Things I'm scared about is that DirectX or anything unportable to Unix, Macs, Beos might be used. And unless I was realy lazy when reading the site, I didn't find much infos about it. |

Oh well, in that case I guess I'll just keep playing the orignal version until then. It'll give me more time to think about what I want to see in the next version. :) * more cargo storage * a better weapon aiming system * a way to sell multiple items in your inventory at once=20 and other things. =20 Zach On Mon, 6 May 2002 16:59:35 +0100 (BST), you wrote: >hi, nope its (slowly) moving through the design stage >at then min, and at a very low level at that. > >Hopefully it will all change soon as i finish my final >year at university on the 29th of May. > >i have time to start coding then :-) > >rick > > --- Zach <zb...@ya...> wrote: > Well, joined the >list today, but from the look of >> the archives, there >> isn't very much traffic yet. Well, joined the list today, but from the look of the archives, there isn't very much traffic yet. How many people are on the list so far? Also, what's this list for - basically people who are going to be actively involved in designing and programming, or just a place to kick around ideas and such? Zach Babayco zbaco @ yahoo.com |
