Hard to say without more detail. What OS are you running? If you can catch the problem in the act, what does ps -ef (or -aux depending on OS) show? Hi,=20 I'm using sudoscript and I'm having one problem. Under certain circunstances (maybe so many logger processes?), when a user logs with the audited shell using /usr/bin/ss - -u user, it does dont show the prompt (i.e. ss does not start). Any ideas of what is going on? Thank you very much in advance Regards Anabella |

I realize there's tons of ways to do evade it. My developers claim that they "must have root access on the box" or they can't do development. I'm not in a position to say no, so I'm trying to do as much as I can to watch them. I sympathize with the paper you wrote, in that sometimes giving them root access is inevitable. I figure I'll log it as close I can until something goes wrong, and at least I can take that log to them and show it to the developers, and hopefully then be able to take away root. I don't care much about the announcement that it's being logged. I want them to know that. I don't however want them tobe able to say when they screw something up that, "that Script started... thing is what caused me to do rm -rf on /." Don't ask how it relates to anything, but trust me, that excuse will be used when something goes wrong. Does anybody know of where I can get the new non-BSD'd (if it even exists) script command? On RH7.3 and up, the script command has the -q option. I tried looking for the source but looking for a binary called script is quite tedious. Again, thanks in advance, ~Matt Valites Unix Admin. I haven't even tried to get the BSD derived Linux source for script(1) to compile on Solaris. I note that you announce that the shell is logged, so I assume your concern is that the script(1) announcement tells the user exactly where to go to evade the auditing. This is annoying, but consider that 'xterm' is another easy way to evade the audit trail, among many, many others available to a root enabled user. --On Friday, October 25, 2002 11:28:02 AM -0400 Matthew C Valites <mva...@ba...> wrote: > I have sudoscript set up so that it runs upon login for root. I have sudoscript set up so that it runs upon login for root. I used debian to get the source code for script, but it's quite heavily BSD'd and won't compile on Solaris. I would like that "Script started..." to not appear. Greetings, As has been previously mentioned, I've been working (on and off, in my own copious free time) on a c equivalent (sort of) to sudoscript. It does not have the same design goals, and it is far from being completed... But it is working, and does what I need it to do before I release even a tentative version. It is called PseudoPod, and so far has been run on HP-UX 11.0, AIX 4.3.1 and Linux 2.2/2.4. It hasn't been tidied up much yet, but version 0.5 is now available at http://software.mutant.net/ppod.html (Follow the download link at the bottom of the page...) Features It doesn't rely on script Completely stand alone program Individual logfiles for each session (easier to see what someone did) Works on HP-UX, AIX and Linux GPL Additional features for this program might include... Automake/Autoconfigure support (just ./configure; make ; make install) Support for more platforms (OpenBSD/NetBSD/FreeBSD/Solaris Plus any that I can get access to a development platform for, or that people provide patches for.) Configurable Logging (Log/Don't log depending on a configuration file and User list) Network logging (Log to a single server across the network, or locally if you can't connect to it, or both) Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Welcome, David! I've had a couple of thoughts since you first contacted me about this. You are really discussing two different features that add up to better enterprise management. The first is central configuration of sudo authorization. This would involve remote munging of the sudoers file, coupled with a central store of user identities. This sounds like an interesting app seperate from sudoscript. I could get interested in this, but my day job is making serious demands on my time. The second component is remote logging of keystrokes over an encrypted connection. This sounds like a very interesting feature. It presupposes a management app, presumably the same one that would control authorization. It also calls for an encrypted and authenticated transport. The natural way to do this in an open source app would be to use ssh. I took a look at Net::SSH::Perl after we exchanged mail. This is a pure Perl implementation of SSH1 and SSH2. I expected it to call in a chain of module dependencies, but it exceeded my expectations by a large margin. Currently, sudoscript relies on nothing outside the base Perl distro as commonly configured on Red Hat Linux. I'd like to keep it that way. That means reliance on command-line ssh. There's also the matter of key management to consider. Managing multiple concurrent logging streams would also be a challenge. As it happens, I'm doing that right now in my current day job. I could borrow concepts from that effort. I can see how the two features are interlinked. However I think I should take the discussion over to sudo-devel to see if there is any prior art. --On Monday, July 15, 2002 11:50:58 PM +0100 David Chung <da...@ch...> wrote: > Hi, > > I am new to this list but I have a few ideas/suggestions for sudoscript. > > In an organisation that I have worked in we played around with an > application called Powerbroker by Symark. Hi, I am new to this list but I have a few ideas/suggestions for sudoscript. In an organisation that I have worked in we played around with an application called Powerbroker by Symark. The package is good but comes at a price. Although this product is intended to be a more sophisticated sudo replacement it offers a couple of good features. One of them is allowing access to be brokered from a central secured server to a client requesting privedged access, it also allows keystroke logging back to the central server. This is all done over an encrypted connection like SSL. Does anyone think it might be worth looking to move sudoscript into a client server type application? Regards |

Having heard no negative feedback to 2.0.0beta2, I am preparing to release Sudoscript 2.0.0. This is your last chance to ruin my day and improve my software all in one fell swoop! 8) If you are interested, download 2.0.0 beta2 from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/sudoscript/sudoscript-2.0.0beta2.tar.gz Or http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/sudoscript/sudoscript-2.0.0beta2-1.noar ch.rpm And brutally grind the code into a submissive pile of jelly, before sending me your bug reports. Or not. You could just wait until 2.0.0 is released, sometime in the next couple of days. -- Howard Owen "Even if you are on the right EGBOK Consultants track, you'll get run over if you hb...@eg... +1-650-339-5733 just sit there." - Will Rogers |

Should be on Freshmeat soon. Tommy, you will see I've incorporated more of your suggestions. Thanks a lot! *Tue Jun 11 2002 hbo sudoscript v 2.0.0beta2 Use 'script -f' to tell script to flush buffers on Linux. Turn off buffering on the MERGEFIFO on all platforms. *Tue Jun 11 2002 hbo Add a logfile announcement of the logger daemon. Modify Merger logfile announcement. *Tue Jun 11 2002 hbo Add a --datefmt= flag to sudoscriptd controlling the leading timestamp in the private log file. Choices are: --datefmt=long gives 'Day Mon dd hh:mm:ss TZ ccyy'. --datefmt=sortable gives 'ccyymmddhhmmss'. Anything else (inc. no switch) gives 'Day Mon dd hh:mm:ss'. *Tue Jun 11 2002 hbo Fixed a bug where ss would only look at the first line of ps output when looking for sudoscriptd. Only seemed to be a problem on BSD platforms, but maybe that was just my luck. -- Howard Owen "Even if you are on the right Nuasis System Administrator track, you'll get run over if you ho...@nu... 408-350-4952 just sit there." - Will Rogers |

Thanks for any help you can offer. > > Adam Morris' idea sounds good - I was thinking that this sort of > functionality (session logging) should be built into the shell (hello > SUN?)- The problem with this is you'd need to hack every shell a user might choose. Bash source is available, as is source for tcsh, but ksh, sh and csh are closed source. Also, you'd have to step up to maintaining somewhat complicated programs across multiple platforms. This would include tracking changes in the mainline projects. This is a whole lot more than I have time for. 8) > even tried setting 'ss' as $SHELL -- worked fine except for the > fact that 'script' called itself recursively (!). Right, script(1) invokes what's in the SHELL envvar. You wouldn't want to force your users to run as root. One thing this approach would be vulnerable to is running Xwindow apps. Typing 'xterm' evades your audit trail. Sudo and sudoscript are also vulnerable to this, of course. > 4) this brings the point of buffering of the FIFO, I am wondering if > there is a way to flush each line and timestamp it as it is written > to/from the terminal, instead of bulk timestamping them. this would make > an easier time of determining concurrency of commands issued on the same > box by multiple users. Buffering in stdio is controlled by setbuf(3) and its kin. The problem is that script(1) opens its own channels. You can't get at these from external code, I don't think. You might be able to find the channels used by script(1) by groveling the kernel ala lsof(8), but changing the buffering would mean actually diddling the kernel data structures associated with the process. The only way to do this would be to use your own port of the (BSD derived) script(1) code. The code is not overly complex, but it uses ptys and other BSDisms that might be tough to port over to Solaris or Irix, or any other SysV based platform. That's a big win for using Perl, of course. The fiendish idea of doing script(1)-like stuff in Perl just occurred to me. I wonder how much work that would actually be? It would be a 3.0 thing, if feasible. What script(1) does is to grab stdin, and pass all output on to the shell, which it opens in a pipeline. It forks two children. One reads the stdout of the shell and passes it on to the real stdout. The other copies the shell's stdout to the typescript. This sounds like a fun project, once the killer demo we are getting ready for here is done. > > good luck with the development and thanks for the comments/credit. Sudoscript is a system for running audited root shells with sudo and script(1). The 2.0 architecture allows multiple concurrent sessions, with output tagged with a session ID (username:pid) in the log file. The beta1 release incorporates numerous bug fixes from the alpha release series. It was a hangover from the 1.x code in which I opened the singular FIFO for read/write. This is an error in Solaris and OpenBSD. If it's also an error in POSIX 1, then it's probably also an error in Linux. The Linux and FreeBSD man pages for mkfifo(2) and open(2) don't mention a O_RDWR restriction on FIFOs. OpenBSD does have such a restriction, and returned an error when an attempt was made to open a fifo for read/write. Solaris open(2) mentions the restriction, but the OS doesn't complain when you actually open a FIFO this way. In any case, the 2.0 architecture doesn't require two-way I/O on any of the FIFOs, so getting rid of the O_RDWR mode on the front-end FIFO in sudoshell and sudoscriptd fixes the problem for all platforms. The code change is in CVS. I'm not going to cut another alpha release for this. I'll roll it in to the first beta on Wednesday instead. Not to mention the "triangulation" you get getting an app to run under a different OS. My little project runs on Perl, so the picky C compiler doesn't help me. But routinely running on many architectures keeps me current on what's portable. And problems that show up on one platform can inform design decisions on many platforms. Although I'm not sure I can say that about my current problems with OpenBSD. It's picky about opening FIFOs for read/write. --On Friday, May 31, 2002 04:03:19 PM -0700 Florin Andrei <fl...@sg...> wrote: > On Fri, 2002-05-31 at 15:40, Howard Owen wrote: >> >> I'm tremendously grateful for the support you SGI folks have shown. >> I'm not throwing out the Irix support. I'm seriously thinking of making a few accounts on my home Irix machine publicly available for various Free Software developers. I did that sporadically in the past, but now i need a better infrastructure (put the machine on a separate "branch" on my firewall, get a larger hard-drive, etc.). It's not only Irix which benefits from that, it's also the open source applications. For example, PureFTPd was thorougly cleaned up in early stages (around 1.0.0) using MIPSPro, the Irix native C compiler, which is extremely pedantic about code errors, "syntax mud" and stuff like that. But i need some time to spare first. And, yeah, a bigger HDD. -- Florin Andrei "You can get excited about just any subject if you study it enough. I'm targeting Wednesday, June 5th for a beta 1 release of sudoscript 2.0. If I can't figure out my OpenBSD troubles by then, I'll temporarily drop that OS from the distribution. Also, if I get Irix patches, I'll roll them into the beta. Otherwise I'll temporarily drop it too. I'm tremendously grateful for the support you SGI folks have shown. I'm not throwing out the Irix support. But the code seems to work well on Linux and Solaris, and since 2.0 is a significant improvement in multiuser environments, I'd like to get it out there sooner rather than later. I'll gladly roll the Irix support back in any time you care to send patches. Thanks very much for your help so far. -- Howard Owen "Even if you are on the right Nuasis System Administrator track, you'll get run over if you ho...@nu... 408-350-4952 just sit there." - Will Rogers |
