Not to mention the "triangulation" you get getting an app to run under a different OS. My little project runs on Perl, so the picky C compiler doesn't help me. But routinely running on many architectures keeps me current on what's portable. And problems that show up on one platform can inform design decisions on many platforms. Although I'm not sure I can say that about my current problems with OpenBSD.
