When I try to load any video file that is encoded using x264 codec, Subtitle workshop (6.0a) crashes, without any additional information.
I don't think this is a codec issue because I can read the files with VLC and I don't have an error message saying that the codec is absent.
Has anyone encounter the same issue ? Or the other way, has anyone successeded in subtitling x264 files ?

x264 files open just fine in Subtitle Workshop, as virtually ANY other video file that you have proper codes installed for in the system.
VLC opens the files fine because it uses internal codecs included in the program.
Subtitle Workshop doesn't include any codecs, it uses external codecs - the system codecs.
You need to install the latest version of one of the popular codec packs like K-Lite to use Subtitle Workshop's video preview. If you already have a codec pack installed, uninstall it and install its latest version.

I had a similar problem, Subtitle workshop (6.0a) didn't read a lot of videos.
I installed, as Spiridinov proposed, the codec packs like K-Lite full.
The problem worsened. Subtitle workshop (6.0a)crashed everytime i worked with it.
Then, i disabled the vosub and began to work better than ever.

VobSub is also problematic because it renders the subtitle file into the video while Subtitle Workshop is displaying the subtitles as well, resulting in two subtitles displaying. Always disable VobSub when working with SW.

What exactly happens when you try to open the file? Is there an error message?
Did you try changing the video renderer to VRM9 from the menu Movie > Video Renderer?

Me too I have had problems with SW even though I downloaded K-lite full and disabled Vobsub as Spiridonov instructed. SW does not crash when I open the video now, BUT, it shows no image and, of course, no subtitles...No error messages, just a black screen. I can hear the audio. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi. I was having the same problem, and the change of the video renderer to VRM9 solve it.
Thank you so much!

I tried to install K-Lite Codec but ended up with Instacodecs--is this the same? I still can't open an mp4 video file. I changed the video renderer to VRM9 but still can't open the movie.

When i open MP4 file, video stream is faster than audio stream. They are not synchronized.
Can i fix that somehow?

Download SW version 6.0e which supports VLC and H264 here https://sourceforge.net/projects/subtitle-workshop-classic/files/v6.0e_12/
