Hi Jack.
For the second one, this is an old known issue : Subtitle Workshop is not able to open MP4 and MKV containers. I'm currently searching a way to do so, I'll keep informed the community if I find a solution.
For the first one, what is exactly the name of the subtitle file and its extension ?

I think that there is some mistake here.
I can open MP4 and MKV video file with Subtitle Workshop 6.0b.
If you can open them using your default player, than you're able to do the same with SW 6.0b.
Check your codecs.
It seems to be a codec conflict and/or bad configuration.

The issue with MKV and MP4 exists, Gab Arito, because I had exactly the same issue with fresh installations of both 6.0b and 6.0c versions. My default player was MPC-HC with a fresh installation of K-Lite codec pack, this video player opens perfectly MKV and MP4 but Subtitle Workshop, by default, does not !
Here is what to do to fix this issue (thanks to Kameleon): to download the Haali Media Splitter and install it.
During the splitter installation process, it is proposed to disable two other Matroska splitters (including the one of K-Lite) and to associate mkv files with Window Media Player, but you don't have to do that if you don't want. I personnaly keep on using MPC-HC and its internal Matroska splitter as preferred media player for videos.
What is important in the Options panel is to keep MP4 support enabled so that this splitter is called by Subtitle Workshop for MP4 as for MKV.
Once Haali Matroska splitter is installed, Subtitle Workshop is able to open MKV and MP4 video files !
😄

As I said, the problem is not related to Subtitle Workshop, but with codecs conflicts and configurations.
If you got a solution for the problem without need to change/modify SW is because the problem came from another source.
Haali Media Splitter, K-Lite and other fixes you did are all related to codec configurations.
...As I already said.

About the other problem, I bet that is something about syntax/formatting of the subtitle file and can be easily solved if Jack Torrance brought a sample to us.

Jack, I could not find any problem with your file.
It's plain text, although it is turkish language, it is 1252 Latin I code page, timecode and text are displayed correctly, obeying SRT format rules, and it was opened without problem using Subtitle Workshop 6.0b.
Please, make sure about SW version also about API 1.15. Both you check at About window.
I see no reason for you cannot open that file.
I also ask for other user try to open the same attached file too and report here if it got error or not.

To fix "is a bad subtitle or an unsupported format." you coult try to make sure it's in a supported character format, ASCII is a safe bet, but you'll lose special chars.

Hello friends,
When I try to open a subtitle "File - Load Subtitle" I get "... is a bad subtitle or an unsupported format."
When I Try to pen a video file "Movie - Open" I get "...mkv is not a valid video file."
Is there a solution for these?
Thanks

Check your codecs.

I had installed latest K-Lite Codec Pack.
So how to fix that?
You have to check your codecs integrity, your system and your video splitters and so on.
Take the tips from Daneel53 to start.

About "unsupported format", please, paste here some piece of your subtitle file.
It seems to be some character mispositioning or similar.

Thanks for the response.
The subtitle extension is ".srt"
The subtitle file is "INSIDIOUS.srt"
Ok, Jack, fine, but you have to bring a part/piece of the file to be analysed.
Just the name of the file is absolutely useless.
How to attach a file?
While posting there is "Add attachments" near "Post"
When I click this it returns me up of the page.
I could do it now.
Here is the subtitle file.

I get "INSIDOUS.srt does not exist" error with Subtitle Workshop 6.0b.
I get "bad subtitle or an unsupported format" error with Subtitle Workshop 2.51
API version is 1.15 on the Subtitle Workshop 6.0b.
I can't open also any other subtitle files as well.
I installed "Haali Media Splitter 1.13" I didn't touch anything while installing.
Still Subtitle Workshop can't open ".mkv" file.
How to fix it?
Last edit: Jack Torrance 2018-04-03
I found the problem. The video file and the subtitle file must be on the drive C.
Subtitle Workshop won't open the files on the drive D
Why?
How to fix it?
To fix "is a bad subtitle or an unsupported format." you coult try to make sure it's in a supported character format, ASCII is a safe bet, but you'll lose special chars.
