I recently upgraded my system to a new Intel i7 mainboard running fully patched Win8.1 Enterprise x64. Although I have the same config on my Dell laptop, where Subtitle Workshop runs fine, on this system I ran into several problems. First, the installer version refused to install unless I ran it as Administrator because it kept saying it didn't have permission to save SubtitleWorkshop.exe. I knew from experience that installing apps as Administrator can cause issues when you try to run them later, so I wasn't surprised when this was the case.
SW was consistently locking up after loading SRT files. Upon loading, 99% of the time SW put some ridiculously large value into the "Input FPS" and "FPS" fields. The few times it read the FPS from the SRT correctly the app would run fine, but after misreading the FPS it was always just a matter of seconds or minutes until SW would freeze up, even if I managed to changed to values to something sane. I tried running it in compatibility mode for Win7 and even WinXP but it didn't help. Neither did running SW as Administrator. I eventually hit on a solution, but I still don't know why the installer version of SW won't run on my new system without freezing. The solution for me was to run the portable version of Subtitle Workshop, which works perfectly. I created a new "C:/Portable" directory and copied the portable SW files there.
The only significant difference between my laptop and desktop setups is that the new desktop is running off an Intel flash drive, whereas the laptop is sporting a 750GB hybrid.
I thought this might help others who can't get SW6+ to run properly in a new PC.
