Just to clarify the previous comment, I am specifically referring to Android - I simply can't use it with caching turned on (and without it, data usage is crazy), since it makes such a mess of the regular music app.

+1 for this. It really annoys me too. Surely it should be a case of just adding new substitution values to the transcode command line to pass the right options to the encoder as the pipe only passes the uncompressed audio between the decoder and the encoder

This is almost a must-have. Currently Subsonic pollutes the standard music application with loads of rubbish, since the cached files are untagged.
