There's a thorough discussion of this bug and identification of a workaround in this thread on the Subsonic forums.

Summary:

My file structure is, for the most part, as follows: Z:\Music\%genre%\%artist%\%date% - %album%\[Disc %discnumber%]\%tracknumber% - %title%

However, for some singles for which I already have an artist folder, I include them in the root artist folder as follows: Z:\Music\%genre%\%artist%\%title%

The problem is that folders that do not have single mp3s directly inside are sorted first, and then all other directories are sorted. I've attached a screenshot showing what this looks like. In this screenshot, the folders Metallica, Metric, Muse, Plain White T's, and Rufus Wainwright have single mp3s in them. All other folders don't.

Oh, and to be clear: the proper way to handle sorting should be to sort directories/files at the current level, ignoring everything you might know about the children.

I just upgraded to 5.2 and the bug is still there :-(

Hits me too. Really annoying. How can it be difficult to sort alphabetically?

First Google result for "subsonic folder not sorted" landed me here. Unbelievable that it's been over two years and the folders still don't sort alphabetically. Pretty sure good ol' DOS 5.0 managed that with no real issue, how is this remotely acceptable?
